Crashed my car to miss hitting possum.
« on: January 23, 2012, 02:13:58 AM »
Last night I did just what the title says.  Going down a 4 lane divided hwy at the speed limit of 45 with cruise control on.  The road was wet from earlier rain.  This big possum darted out at the precise distance in which I hadn't any time to hit the brakes so I swerved.  I know, I know, I've always heard not to turn but hit the animal but my instincts took over.

I was in control even though the rear end broke traction.  I countersteered just right but then the cruise control took over and kept speeding the car up again.  Slide after slide -- one way then the other getting worse.  I didn't realize it was the cruise control causing it.  I kept thinking gee, I oughta be slowing down soon!  Finally spun around hit the curb and went right over it into wet grass and a road sign.

Car towed to a towing co yard for now.  Thank goodness I have my scooter for a back up vehicle.

My lesson learned is this:  I'll never use cruise control in wet conditions again!  I would have been fine if it hadn't been on.  If I'd been on a two lane road with traffic coming at me it could have really been terrible.  As it was, there was nobody else on my side of the road.

Sorry about the accident.  My insurance agent told me to just hit the animal.  It doesn't count on your insurance points.  But if you crash your vehicle swerving to miss the animal, then it will be counted as an accident and your rates could go up.  Another new instinct to learn!  Mostly glad you weren't on the scooter and most of all you are not hurt.

Thanks, guys.  Yeah, glad I'm not hurt and glad not on scooter too!  One of the troopers told me if I'm on my scooter and it happens to pop a wheelie and bring the front wheel down on the possum.  Ha!  Well, I'm such an animal lover I actually am glad I missed the poor thing even if I did wreck.

Darned cruise.  I've been taking it REAL easy on the scooter last couple of days!

Zombie!  Don't make me wreck again just to hear from you bud.  :D  You know you mostly were/are my inspiration for all I do with my scooter!  Tryin to keep the faith over here but hard without you. . . I understand tho.

Thanks Hoo! Please do not wreck again. I would sure like to spend more time here because of all the good will. Just hard to find the time... 30+ regular marine customers, 8-9 scoot customers, 15 or so assorted engine customers, 4 Presa Canarios, 9 cats, 3 girl friends, and a Hippie Grass Dr. all looking for time. Love ya Bro!  http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/canarydog.htm (for the presa canario lovers)
