Of course you do. What you are recommending is that the dealer hide that cost in the final price of the scooter, while trying to explain to the customer why the price is $300 higher than MSRP.
And why don't you announce a price valid on pier Shanghai, Yokohama or Taipei? It would be a sensational low price!
Let your customers care for all the shipping and customs and ...

msrp =  m.s. retail price.
What is a retail price? According to my dictionary the final price for a single good.
Not a wholesale price and not a manufacturing price.
But thanks to you, I will be extra careful before ordering anything in the US.

I see nothing wrong with that - at least I know what I can expect to pay out of pocket at a glance.   They can break down the details later if need be.    Perhaps the whole MSRP could be adjusted, or the concept of MSRP eliminated entirely as no one probably pays MSRP as an out the door price anyway.

The problem is that the dealers typically proudly advertise their "low" prices without taxes and surcharges, then once a customer is in the door then  mention "and oh, by the way, your final cost is actually a little higher because of shipping, and freight/prep, and ...".  For those of us that have previous experience with playing this game, we know to expect that dealers will do this, so we know a little bit about what to expect, and it's less of a problem.  For new customers, it's a put off...customers really don't care what their cost of business is - they want to know their final out of pocket costs.

Hidden cost is forbidden in my country.
Advertised price has to contain taxes and everything else.
The same throughout EU.

I see nothing wrong with it, either. However, the MSRP seems to be a time-honored vehicle sales tradition here in the U.S. anyway.

When the shop I worked in was still open, we always quoted the OTD price ("Out The Door"), which included freight, prep and our ridiculously regressive state+local 9.25% sales tax. No undercoating, extended warranties or hard-sell of accessories.

Many people "only wanting toys" went up the street and bought a Chinese scooter, and some even bought another one when the first one broke down. For many, the price vs. value proposition was fine with them; for many others, they had no idea what they were getting into, and/or thought those with experience in the scooter market were just trying to "rip them off." A good percentage of the latter category will never own another scooter, as soon as they unload the one not running that they have now in their garage.

Is this typical of your experience with your local scooter dealer and Kymco or is this dealer profit padding or a negotiating ploy?

Thanks for your help in advance.

John

$2,600 OTD still in plastic 2012 Yager 200i  (Liquidation Sale).

I was searching Craigslist, EBay, CycleTrader.com and any other place every day for a scooter.  As I scoured the Internet I ran across a link to a good dealer in my area that was liquidating his Kymco inventory.  So I called and asked about the new Yager 200i they had and I asked the salesman for the Out The Door price.  He came back and said his manager would take $2,600 OTD.

On my way to the dealership I kept rehearsing what I would do if they tacked on the $199 document fee and then tried to add the sales tax.  I was going to complain and walk away.

So I get there, the scooter is a brand new blue 2012 on the showroom floor.  The battery is still in the box and it has no mileage.  So I'm thinking, maybe this is A good deal.

Then the paper work comes.  I get a peek of the amount due as the salesman is placing the order on the desk.  To my relief, it says $2,600.  I'm thinking, this might be the best "dealership" experience I've ever had.

Pleasant day, pleasant dealer, great price and perfect scooter for my needs.  Maybe this makes up for all the bad dealership experiences.

I could not live without:
Fuel Injection
Water Cooling
55-60 MPH speed (at least)
The best gas mileage I could get.
I looked at the Honda SH150i and the Kymco 200i

I did it and I'm glad.

I wanted a Yager and they are being discontinued. I found one 10 hours away for $2699, I called
and asked for the out the door price - $3299! I found one an hour away for ~$4000 (he wouldn't
pin down the price). Then finally found one for $3499 + $129 (doc fee) 40 minutes away. I bought
the last one. I don't mind paying MSRP + a little but the $300 shipping is too much!
