Winter has not been kind......
« on: February 29, 2012, 01:05:53 PM »
My AG50 goes to the dealers Friday, still suffering poor starting although better than it was. Now the starter motor quite often will not turn, relay clicks but no movement end up kick starting the bike. Mainly an issue after it has been raining.

Speedo is making some form of plastic rubbing noise, a bit like when a bicycle tyre rubs against a mudguard, at least it sounds like it is coming from the speedo area. All this with 1800Km on the clock, at least with the better weather the engine is running so much better and has a little more pep.  ;D Glad I have a warranty to fall back on........

the weather realy plays a good trick on you when we are tryinng to work on are scoots.
I have been waiteing tell its like 40 out to work on mine cold weather well mess you up.
its all in the air flow and the jets and the way the carb takes in the gas. its hard to adjust that in the cold weather.

Not been that cold here in blighty but all the salt they put on the roads is pretty corrosive stuff when mixed with water............doe not make for a happy AG!

Nice to have a warranty. Not to be "cheeky" or anything... Doesn't Taiwan have winter months? Maybe they are just NOT built for cold weather running (without mods.)

..i dunno, i ride mine every day...year round...

..with the free-flow filter, i have to re-jet about every 40 degree difference in temps tho...

..i been running a lil rich all winter, because we haven't really had any cold weather this year...

The rubbing noise may just be dirt or grime under the front pads or on the disc? Also sounds like a flat battery on the starting, does it kick ok?

I thought the rubbing was the discs even after cleaning the discs with some Autoglym engine cleaner the noise persists and sounds like it is coming from the speedo area not the disc. As I thought the same initially, as for the starter it will kick start fine and it may well be battery related as the motor will turn every now and again or turn and then just click. The battery's are a weak point, unless there is an issue with the bikes charging system. Mine does seem to have weak electrics TBH and may well still be a dodgy connection somewhere. At least the warranty will sort it out, in Sept deffo going for a Gillera Runner, loosing faith in my AG and would not want to take it through another winter TBH.

Hate to admit it but the Girella Runner is a much better scoot than the Ag. More machine than toy as it were. Sorry Slinger. Your Ag is a Very special one tho. Like kin to me

Im surprised youre having bother on a practically new scooter, mine is a 2008 with nearly 19,000km on it and i havent had any real problems yet, just the usual little niggles and wear and tear. I imagine you'll lose a fair bit of cash on the trade in or sale of the a50 if you bought it new? I honestly believe they are decent scooters and pretty well built too, especially for the price, tho the Gillera does look nicer i admit.

Bet your problems are just minor defects and are easily fixed but if your hearts set on a Gillera...........

I am a little surprised but then the electrics have given me issues from day one. The actual engine if really smooth and a nice ride, yes it will loose some cash I bet trade in would be about £600 and would get £800 on eBay as Kymco's don't hold there value as well as Piaggio Group or Peugeot. I think for the money the AG50 is cracking value and good looking with good mechanicals. I have no intention of parting until September at the earliest as you said the warranty will sort out all the small faults. Just not sure if I want to take it through another winter and the corrosion on the top of the front forks and in other areas is another concern.

Gillera runner is a more substantial bike and liquid cooled so will be less bothered about temperature changes and a little more pep which would be nice. Do love the runner in white  ;D

Scoot is all sorted, starter motor had a dodgy connection  most probably caused by road salt corrosion, and rubbing noise from the speedo was just the cable had moved and was pushing up on the speedo a little too tightly. AG purring like a pussy cat and running much better, mechanic said the AG50 has about the best 4 stroke 50cc engine around. Piaggio went back to two stroke as their 4 stroke 50cc was very poor and lacked power.

The issue semt to be that the AG50's electrics are not quite as well protected as other bikes and the very corrosive road salt just eats away at them. Mechanic recomended spraying penatrating fluid around the starter motor area to help prevent and dispel any salt. May have a look how I could better insulate and protectsome of the parts. A good thick coat of grease that could then bee cleaned off in the spring is one idea. The salt damage I have found looks like the metal has been dipped in acid!!!

Yeahva good dollop of wd40 will clean it up and may keep water away. If you want to avoid any corrossion you need to keep it clean as possible especially after riding on salted roads. Thought it would be a minor fix, glad it was.

I am a bit OCD when it comes to cars and bikes and it even got a wash after I had been out in the rain and a good pressure wash once a month! I think this year the salt really seamed to build up to a really fine powder during the cold dry spell, so became more easily dissolved and corresoive when we did have rain. All of my corrosion has occurred since January maybe a little in December. Shows the power of the rock salt and grit used on of rows in terms of ability to eat my scoot  :-*
