Need new headlight bulb fast.
« on: March 02, 2012, 12:56:43 AM »
My sons low beam stopped working yesterday on his 2008 Agility 50. Apparently no stores within 50 miles carry a 12728 S2 Philips Duplo 12v 35/35W headlight bulb.  Are there any alternative that would work?  He has riding class this weekend and I need the low beam to work.

First how do I get the old bulb out of there?  remove the screw above the light, take off the front body panel then some how pull the bulb out from the back?

Can I get a brighter bulb from scooter assassins, if so which model?

I have found that places that work on snowmobles also carry lights that well work on scoots.
take the old bulb out and take it with you.

SA will take two weeks. Go to stadium Yamaha   http://www.stadiumyamaha.com/
Or take it all apart, and glue in another socket w/ a new bulb. Just don't go over 35watts. It will strain your stator till it fails

This will work. Crimp on some connectors to your wires... Green is ground.

We searched five stores today starting with a dealer where my youngest picked out an ATV (pic below) and ending at Wal-Mart.

Since the Hi-beam still works, could it be a loose connection?

How do I get to the bulb?  Big screw above the headlight and remove the front body panel?

I need a BA20d base correct?

to get to the bulb you need to yes take off that one big nut and also there are 4 other screws up front that needs to come out also. good luck and go slow plastic can sometimes be a pain.

I COULD be the switch or wiring. Try wd 40 type stuff sprayed into the switch. You will know better once you get to the bulb

Take out the big silver screw on the front last, 1st go look behind the legshield and you will see 2 screws each side that screw thro to the front, take them out then go round the front and remove the big silver screw. That way the whole front panel with the headlight attached cokes off, pull the rubber protector off the main bulb and take it out.
If you hold the bulb up to a light you can see the filiments inside, most probably one of yours will be broken for the low beam. You can then take the bulb with you to a parts store and ask for a replacement or alternative.
Chaos is my co-pilot.

OK thanks.  The best that the local stores could find was a P21W break light.

Trying it now.  Will this one work for later http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180638867370&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT#shId

Yes it will fit the standard Kymco bulb which is very poor IMO looks different but a BA20D is the right bulb. I upgraded mine to a brighter Xenon look type off of flebay in a similar design. Big improvement in output and visibility.

What bulb did you upgrade to? I've been thinking of obtaining a brighter bulb and somehow making use of the other two top ones.

We could not find a bulb locally so I am going to order a few online.  I am looking at this halogen one http://www.chinesemotoparts.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=103_110&products_id=2040 and the standard replacement bulb http://www.chinesemotoparts.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=2038

If anyone knows of a better place to order in the USA, please post a link.

He can't legally ride it until it has a working light, so he had to use one of the schools 250cc motorcycles for riding class today.  Once he got used to the clutch he had a blast.  How he wants a "real" bike, but realizes that the insurance would be at least $700US more per year than with the "moped".

He did so well at school that I cut the CDI when he came home.  That only added an extra 3mph to the top speed, but at least it finally goes an actual 30mph.  Also he can go up a steep hill from a dead stop instead of having to make a run at it.  More rider training 7:45AM tomorrow. Later.

Just be carefull you dont get too high a wattage replacement as it will be bright but it may melt the plastic if it gets too hot.

I second that stick to the same wattage as the OEM one 35w, the holders do melt easily as I found out when mine initially kept arcing.

Here is the cheap one I got on the slow boat from China lasted well so far:
