Needles Don't Sweep.
« on: March 19, 2012, 11:35:46 AM »
Hello all!

I've got a 2012 Xciting RI w/ABS and when you first turn it on, the needles, which are suppose to sweep, don't.

According to the owners manual this is a necessary function that calibrates the tach and speedo.  Every scooter I've ever owned did this.

I'm taking it in to the dealer for the initial 600 mile service and he told me he'll look into it.  It perplexed him enough to where he's going to call someone at Kymco and get their spin on it.

I thought I'ld throw it out to the everday Kymco users out there.  Anyone ever have this problem?

Don in KC.

We are anxiously awaiting an answer on this one.  In over 8,200 miles
I have never seen my speedometer needle sweep (Swing to and fro) when
turning on the key....Except for last week when I applied the manual reset
procedure.  And that only lasted one day before it messed up again.  I have had
more than numerous speedometer issues.  This seems to be such a common
problem it needs to be investigated for a recall.   This is the only fault I've
had with the Xciting Model.

This must be a fuel injected issue as my 2007 carb model does not and has not ever swept? :-*

Well now, I had no idea this was an issure with Kymco Xcitings.  My old People 125S swept, my SYM RV250, and Buddy 125-they all swept.  It seems this should have been addressed especially since they tell you right in it owners manual that they should.

What other speedometer issues are there?

What's this "manual reset" you refer to?

The more I know about my scoot, the better I'll feel.

I have a 2009 Xciting 500ri Feul Injected, and mine has never swept...

I got a few more months on my warranty.

Does anybody's 09 or newer sweep?

The gauges on my 09 don't sweep and I've ridden a 10 that didn't sweep.  According to the manual it also has "winkers" - have you ever seen it wink?  Kymco's manuals aren't the best - and their translations are sometimes lacking.  It's possible that the gauges on the 04 swept and the manual wasn't ever updated.  Look at another 12 and if it's gauges don't sweep then figure it's normal.

Mine do not sweep either. ('09 XC500Ri) Gauges work fine otherwise except for about a 4 mile per hour discrepancy.

Bought my '07 with 4000 miles on it.  Dealer said the instruments had just been replaced under warrantee.  So there was only a few hundred miles registering on the new odometer when I got it.  I've had no problems.  They don't sweep unless I've had the battery disconnected or sometimes after the starter hiccups.

Maybe they sweep in other markets such as Europe, Asia & such, but not here? I think a new manual is in order? :-*

The concensus then is they don't sweep  :-\.  I posted this because they seemed to be pretty animate in the manual that they should.  Like I said, every other scooter I've ever owned had needles that swept.  I accepted this as SOP but never really saw the reason for it's significance.

I was actually quite impressed with the owners manual.  My other scoot is a SYM RV250 and when you read their description of the operation of the hazard lights you know that something definitely was lost in translation.

Scoot well.....
