variator issue.
« on: March 21, 2012, 07:46:27 PM »
Ok. I was getting good top speed, best of about 48mph on the speedo downhill, then it dropped off a bit gradually over a few weeks till i struggled to get to 45mph, usually got about 43-44. I checked my belt which was the stock original and it looked a bit worn after 13,000km so i reppaced it with another Nakura belt the stock size and i got my topend back again. All was fine for a month or so then it dropped off again. I checked the new belt and it was fast becoming toast, the top surface at edges had come off on a couple of areas, so i stuck my old worn belt back in till i got a new one ordered.

New belt is a Malossi kevlar, 736-17.5-30, longer than stock which i wanted to try out. Took it out and i got it off the gauge downhill so i was well chuffed, 52mph showing on the speedo, 1st time i had ever got it off the gauge, i was over the moon. Been running good for 2-3months now but again i noticed i had gradually lost too end till today i went on my test route where i hit 52 and i only reached 45-47? So i had def lost about 5mph. Stripped down the variator and belt and all looked ok. Only thing i noticed was the boss and variator mayne felt a little "sticky" and not as free moving as i would hope. Cleaned it all up and put a very small amount of lubricant on the inside of the boss where it goes round the crank. Went out and my top end was 49- 50 again, a good 4-5mph up on earlier.

This leads me to believe either my boss needs replaced or i need a new variator, anyone agree or disagree?

Since all i did was clean up my old variator and boss and that restored most of my top end i guess the surface of the boss is maybe worn and not as smooth as it should be? or the hole in the variator is worn and unsmooth? I think if i could get some lubricant in there that would stay there and not spin out over my cvt it would be fine but what can i use that will last and not burn off or spray out? As far as i onow you dont usually ever grease the variator or boss so maybe i just need a nice shiney new one?

Just to say also, when i lost top end it would get to 43-44mph then it felt like it was being held back or starved of fuel or air a little, after i lubricated it this went away and my topend returned. Same thing when i replaced my belt, but i wouldve cleaned it all up then too so i think the belt was not the issue, it was the variator or boss or both. I figure the variator is moving in on the boss as i get faster until it gets to 80-90% then its sticking on the boss and not sliding all the way in as it should. Obviously when i clean it up and lubricate it then it helps the variator slide again on the boss and its going all the way over at top speed, so the problem must be with the sliding motion of the variator, right?

See if your problem comes back first. If it does then yeah, I'd probably order a new variator too. I think they all come with a new boss. The Malossi one does for sure.

Yeah i already had a look at the Multivar kit online earlier, used to be near £60 last yr but i found one for £46 tonite. Will see how it goes the next few days and if it gets worse i prob go for the Multivar then. Alao saw a Pollini kit too, anybody tried them?

Oregon, i already have a race variator on it just now thats almost identical to the one in your link. Think its done about 8-9000km so maybe its due a change, noticed a couple of small grooves starting on the face where i sit at 30 and 40mph i guess, not too bad and still looks ok to use for now. I guess you get what you pay for and the Malossi wil last longer?

Word, how long did your Malossi last and did it still look ok after a few km? I can get another one like i have or similair for half the price but if i get double the life out a Malossi it makes sense to do that. Just spent £45 on a new jet, open filter and a couple of different sized belts to try out so maybe need to get the variator at the next pay day. Then again im sure the kids can prob survive on bread and water for 3 weeks, theyre pretty hardy, and daddy needs to go fast again, im sure they'll understand  :D

Plan to open her up again at the weekend and do some tuning so will strip it all down again and give it a good clean and polish up then.

I think i need to get one soon as i got the spare cash for it. I just ordered 2 belts that should arrive today, a stock spare and a 743 cos i wanted to try that out. Hope to fit an open filter, new rollers and upjet to an 88 or 90 on sat so may try out the 743 belt too while im messing about. Was thinkin of doing some body mods and going Matt black soon also but that'll need to wait now if i want a Multivar. I wasnt even meant to be spending any time or money on KymcoBob since i have other priorities in other projects at the moment, but hes been such a good boy since ive had him, he probably deserves a little Italian treat  ;D

I check mine now by putting the boss in the variator and wiggle to see if it wobbles.  If it does it's not good.  On the Xciting the variator has a replaceable bushing inside and that wore out badly on mine once already.  My boss wore out too though to the point that it could wobble inside the var a LOT.

I know it def doesnt wobble cos i did che k that out. Im pretty sure that the surface of the boss is a bit worn off and it hasnt got that polished look anymore, i think dust and crap off the belt may get in between that and the variator. Think i have another boss somewhere in the garage but i put it somewhere safe so i wouldnt lose it, somewhere so safe in fact that even i cant remember where   :D If i find it i'll fit that in at the weekend and give it all a good polish up. Still running good today on the way to work, average of 45mph on the flats. I think it is just wear and tear on the boss so will swap that 1st, if it comes back i'll do the variator cos its def one of those or both. Just happy i know what it is now and i dont need to worry cos its nothing serious.

My new test belts arrived yesterday with my open air filter so hopefully my jets come today or tomorrow and i can get that on and see how he goes then. Just made up a short piece of chrome pipe with a bend in it for the filter at work to bring it out a little from the carb.

Steido don't aren't you running a NCY variator?  If so, they are known not to be of the highest quality.  I can vouch for the Polini, damn good variator.  I really like the Dr. Pulley Sliders in place of conventional rollers as well.

My current variator is a £18 clone race variator from China but it seems to be holding up ok, even after 8-9000km i put on it last hear. It def gave me noticable improvement in accereration and smoothness I used to get a flat spot between around 23-28mph on my old stock variator, soon as i fitted the one i have this disappeared and it just climbs nice smooth now.

If i do go for a new variator im def going for either the Multivar or Pollini kit, both are around the same price here. Im hoping a good clean and polish will get me another good few thousand km's on my current set up tho. If i can find that other damned boss i have somewhere  :)

..then the whole thing started ...wobbling...

..i gots pics of it somewhere in here..

...wavy wear lines in the variator's roller tracks...

..but that's me...
