Not starting up like normal
« on: March 24, 2012, 05:13:55 PM »
My Kymco has always started right up but starting yesterday, it just cranks. The only way I can get it started is to give it some throttle. Other than that it runs great but dies sometimes while in idle. This is a new issue and just starting happening. Any ideas? Is it an idle issue? Is there an easy adjustment?

Thanks

Check your air filter and replace it if it's dirty.  How long ago did you replace the spark plug?  What does the plug look like?  Have you ever had the carburetor cleaned?  It may be time for a rebuild.  Has it sat for a while recently, or maybe gotten rained on?  You could have bad gas...

Look at my post below, (Seems flooded when warm). This should give you an answer? I would also run some sea foam through it a couple of times. :-*

If the battery is maybe 3 or more years old.  Have it checked.
Just replaced mine and it pops right off.

It only has a few hundred miles on it. I wouldnt think its something major. I use premium gas but I will check it out.

I doubt its under warranty. Its a 2007 and I got it from an old man who kept it in an airplane hanger. It only had 75 miles on it when i got it =)

I have ridden it since October and its run perfect since then til now. I thought maybe there was an idle adjustment handy?

Yes, there's an idle adjustment under the small hatch under the seat.  Phillips head screwdriver will do it.  Idle is 1400rpm plus or minus 500rpm with engine WELL warmed up.  I'd guess bad gas so you might need to re-adjust after getting some good gas going through it.   Run some Sea Foam or StarTron in it.  It might clear up in a couple of tankfuls.

Go with the Seafoam sugestions, and get a NEW air filter/fuel filter. If you've done nothing to it because of the low miles i'd suggest a complete service/tune up due to time.

Now wait a minute...You just bought it and it had 75 miles on it,
but it's a 2007.  Could very likely be the battery after all.  When
it's cranking,  does it speed up when you twist the throttle and
give it a little gas?

WOW. Your bike must have set for quite some time. Mine sat for 1 year before I got it. I had to run several tanks through before it ran and ideled right, but it will. Sea foam is great.  :-*

Only a few hundred miles or not - it's a 5 year old scooter.  There are seals and fluids that need to be changed regardless of use, gasoline sitting for years turns into varnish with residue.  Some of that residue may have been loosened up by the additives in your premium fuel and is now causing your carb problems.  Running a few tanks of seafoam may get it to run through or it may clog the carb - requiring a carb overhaul.  Nothing to lose by doing it - as a carb rebuild would actually be my first choice.

I'd also replace front and rear brake fluid, coolant, engine oil and transmission oil, fuel filter, and check the air filter.
