More fresh oil used when changing oil filter?
« on: April 15, 2012, 12:13:45 AM »
Knowing that my lack of mechanical ability and/or thought is keeping my mind moving on this, I still find the need to ask:

Do you find you place more oil in your scoots when doing an oil & filter change than just an oil swap (new for old)?

This is what I am finding in my experience. My non-mechanical logic tells me its due to the new oil filter sucking up some fresh oil and filling the "chamber" where the filter is placed.

Curious if any of you can clear me up on this. I tend to learn/retain knowledge best when it makes sense - not just "this happens because it happens."

Thanks,
PBAS

That's the case with most motors.  The filter holds some oil even when the motor and pan are drained, and the area that the filter faces -- the gallery? -- holds some that does not drain unless the filter is removed.  I think that's how it works.  I'm not a mechanic.  As I recall, the difference is usually about a quarter of a liter or so on most cars and motorcycles, if both volume specifications are given.

You should always re check the oil level after replacing the filter. I pre fill all the filters I can. Some you cannot due to mounting angles. The filter does hold oil, even during an oil change because Most have a check valve to prevent "dirt" from getting back into the engine.

Didn't have a choice, unfortunately. The Kymco dealer that I bought the scooter from does not carry my filter in stock (even though they sell the scooters. Wonder why no one has confidence in them?), and I had to wait 2 weeks to get one. :/   Figured it was better to at least change the oil than do nothing at all.

Had the same issue. I am in Canada and my dealer didn't bring them in for me at the time I ordered the bike. I got mine in the states (PA). My dealer now has 3 of them that he can't get rid of. I won't buy them from him. I have the only DT300I in the provence.

Most of the dealers see scoots as Bic Lighters anyway. Just something to make a dollar on. If they applied themselves they might see a new market in reasonable parts/service. Just out for the quick buck.

I think that's what the dip stick is for.  Here's my routine oil check. (1) Remove dip stick and check the oil level (2) Place oil on fingers to "feel" the oil. Based on experience, I know what a good oil feels like. (3) Smell the oil. Good oil smells like good oil. (4) Place several drops of oil on white paper. Good oil looks good.

Another oil addict is born. Make sure you let it cool before sampling. I wouldn't want you to fry your heart!

I have found that when changing oil & filter in my Yager, I must replace exactly 1 qt. of oil.  After filling with 1 qt. and running it for about a minute the dip stick shows oil right up to the top of the marked area.  It seems a perfect match.  Also, the one time that I did not replace the filter, I put in as much as I took out.
