Actually the west coast where i live is pretty evenly mixed with both catholic and protestant, most of Scotland is. I dont knowthe exact figures but i would maybe give the protestants the slight edge on population overall, its not that wide a gap tho, where i work is probably 50/50. Up north in the Highlands and Islands is more protestant still i guess, some of the small islands are hardcore protestant and wont work on sundays etc, it all closes down for the day, they even complained about ferry and plane services running to their island on a sunday. Prob the same as island near you, they seem pretty backward and stuck in the past, comes from living cut odf from "nirmal" modern life i guess.
Personally i dont speak gaelic at all, i used to know a few words but i forgot them now. We do have Gaelic schools etc tho for those whi want it. Gaelic was never really spoken in Lowland Scotland, it was more a Highland thing, we just spoke Scots, thats a kind of mixture of English, with a gaeoic twist on some words etc, prob why you and others dont understand us
If we talk to non Glaswegians we tend to slow down and change how we speak, more English like, but amoungst ourselves when we speak normal Glaswegian/Scots at normal speed you wpuld be pretty lost, like that drunk guy you know
The Scots and Irish have a long history together, were like cousins. Many of our surnames are from Irish decent now and some Irish have Scots surnames from all the population movements in the past. If you know about the troubles in Ireland you will remember the IRA bombing campaign in the 70's-80's where they decided if Britain wasnt going to leave Ireland then theywould start bombing Britain and make them leave. They did loads of attacks but if you notice, not one attack happened in Scotland? Thats because so many Irish grouos relied upon Scottish support,we had and stil do have the catholic side supporting a free-united Ireland and the protestant side supoort the British keeping Northern Ireland British. We have marching bands etc like they do in Ireland for both sides who still parade here every year, its crazy
In fact the Loyal Orange Order (protestant loyalists) have MORE marches in Scotland than Ireland
Go figure that one out?
