Let’s just hope we don't follow:

Disgruntled French show Sarkozy the door
Voters angered over spending cuts oust president Nicolas Sarkozy, picking Socialist Francois Hollande.

France has a long history of socialism, its hardly surprising. They guillotined their royal family  :o

The French are ok in my book, i like em. They dont like something and they hit the streets en masse and make it known, unlike all us in our wussy little countries  :P

Viva la France  :D

I my self am long overdue for some real change in the US gov. What gets me about France is that the new leader wants to tax the rich @ 75%. If I were rich I'd either stop producing or leave the country.

I understand progressive taxing but 75% seems a bit on the high side.

If my gov. started hitting me for that amount I'd be gone.

Yeah well i think of myself as pretty socialist and left leaning but even i agree 75% tax is steep and if i was rich i prob would decide to lea e with my money and go retire somewhere. Im all for taxing the rich and think if you earn more you can afford to pay more but you stil need to balance that with making it unattractive for investment into your country and economy. Unless you go full communist and everything is state owned you will need to encourage private enterprise and they wont do that by taxing high earners 75%. Saying that tho some of thise who will be in that tax bracket deserve to be hammered cos they domt deserve the pay they get. Banker for instance and CEO's of larve corps who get millions in bonuses while the company value drops. Some of these guys are paid obscene amounts for not a lot really when you compare them to say a surgeon, doctor, firefighter, care worker etc, the pay gap between rich and poor today is shickong.

In my world the bottom earner of ANY company should be earning at least say 5% of what the top guy gets. That way even the cleaner is paid a livable wage, if the CEO want more? Great, the cleaner gets a raise too.

Cant wait till im in charge of things, theres gonna be some major changes  :D

SPORTS STARS OR COPS   It is obvious who deserves more. But who gets more.
Don't wanna jack the thread... People HAVE to make the changes... Leaders are too cumffy at the top to bother. Congrats. to the people of France. (frogs)

I understand progressive taxing but 75% seems a bit on the high side.

If my gov. started hitting me for that amount I'd be gone.

The beauty of the U.S. is that you are free to leave for whatever low-tax paradise you like, at any time, and you can take all the money and toys you can carry. I usually recommend Somalia (0% tax!). Good luck, and I hope you aren't hunted as food. Sincerely.

During the Golden Age when Eisenhower was president, the top marginal tax rate was 90%. We built the interstate highway system, and banked enough to send men to the moon in the next decade.

Most people have no idea what the marginal tax rate means. They think that if it's 37%, that the richest people pay 37% of their incomes in U.S. income taxes, but no. They pay 0% on the first $7000, 8.3% on the next $12,800, 11.2% on the next $38,900, 15.4% on the next $61,200... just like everyone else, until they get way above $250,000, where it starts getting taxed at more like 37%. The effective tax rate (what an individual ACTUALLY pays after deductions and loopholes) is always ignored in such discussions. ALWAYS.

Unless you don't work for a living, and get all your money off investments, like Mitt Rmoney. He pays less than 15%, 'cause that is "capital gains." Rich people get to pay less, 'cause they can hire people to write the tax laws that say "rich people create jobs, and deserve to pay less in taxes."

So, please, John Galts -- go to Somalia. Don't come back. We don't need you.

You aint got me anyway JP, im not American, im Scottish  :P

Seriously tho, your right, i dont know all about the ins and out of the tax system. I was only making the point if you tax too high then they will leave and companies may not invest, or maybe they will and i was wrong, i dont know? Im all for making the rich pay more instead of living like kings while poor folk work 4 jobs just to feed their family, they just need to do it so we dont scare em all away, thats all. If we can raise the tax to 90% and things still function as they did then great, do it. I just dont know if it would work thats all, guess you proved it already does tho?

Oh, and i pay my taxes alright, i dont earn enough to employ an accountant to fix my books. Im lucky to live in a country which offers decent social welfare,  has "Free"NHS medical and dental care,  state pension and we can have a free university education too if we like, so i know MY tax money goes to a good cause. I have no problem paying even more just so long as those up the ladder also pay the same percentage at least of their income in tax.
