Service manual says every 1 year or 6000 miles -- whichever comes first.  I admit to not changing mine nearly that often.   I've used a Bel-Ray "Gear Saver" 90 weight oil.  Any oil of the right weight should be fine, though.

To tell the truth, on my first bike, I've never changed it, and the previous owner
never did either. 30.000km and no issues on that bike (50cc peugeot scoot).

I did change it on my Agility 125.. I think twice in 20.000km..
Just use any oil that matches the viscosity stated in the owner's manual.

I grab any "good brand" 80W90.

The gears are hidden in their own case behind the clutch area -- right where the drive goes into the rear wheel.  The drain bolt is on the bottom rear of the transmission and the fill bolt is kind of at the back top of the tranny.

People have come up with inventive ways of getting new oil in since it isn't easy and you can't just pour it in.  A really big syringe would work well I think.  I had to tape a funnel to some tubing and hang the funnel from the rear reflector with wire.  Took at least an hour to get .57 qt. in it since the oil is so thick.

I have never changed mine. I open the fill hole and it is full, and the oil is clear. To me it is just like a differential in a rear wheel car, it's just spinning gears, not alot of heat. I am going to change it soon and I will go with a 90 weight synthetic like mobile one, and then never change it again? And yes, why is the fill hole so small? ??? :-*

I took about a foot of 1/4 inch gas line, stuck a brass fitting in one end, (the adapter piece used to put two 1/4 inch gas line pieces together or to splice together). Any auto parts shop will have them. They are the barbed brass fittings used for gas lines. Barbed on both sides. And then I sniped off the tip of the gear oil bottle spout, jammed hose over tip, held brass piece tight against fill hole, turned bottle up-side down and squeezed in oil untill half bottle was in trans case. Took 10 minutes at most to do entire job. Why is the fill hole so small? So you have to take it to a dealer? ??? :-*

Can be done. Oil not really stressed inside there anyway. Even in cars, they just check and add if low.

I did not put synthetic in mine when I changed it. I used 80/90 regular oil. It was on sale. The syn oil was way over twice the price, and my funds are a little low at the time, so I thought, well the original oil lasted over 30,000 miles. Why spend the extra $? :-*
