Okay, So took a ride this morning and was hittin 50 riding with the wind. On way back into heavy wind I was riding along @ 40ish when all sudden it started making a winding noise and there was no acceleration. I slowed down and took off again, rode smooth up til 35-40 and started making the noise again and no acceleration. So I babied it back home and figured I would ask the guru's here before I started opening shlt up..... Any idea's?

Could be a loose variator nut? Or cracked outer variator? May even be the belts coming apart and a loose bit is flapping as it spins.

Do you know if its coming from the cvt area or off the engine?

I did some work on mine at the weekend and forgot to fit a spacer i so the variator nut worked loose after a few hundred yds, it made a noise a bit like a garden strimmer and i lost power. Luckily i switched it off and pushed it back home and had no problem after i refitted it all correctly.
Chaos is my co-pilot.

If I had to guess, I would say it's coming from CVT somewhere. It's funny you mention that, As I did have it apart last weekend to see if drive boss was de-restricted.... well it was, so I put it back together. I've rode about 200 miles since then and all was fine until today...... If the nut came loose, wouldn't it do this at any acceleration then? Why just at 30+? and yeah, It sounds exactly like a weed whacker!

Opened CVT for visual inspection and didnt see anything abnormal.....I didn't take off variator though. Took it for a short ride and it's not doing it anymore.... Could it have possibly been the roller weights jammed? Am now feelin not so confident in long rides.... Way too hot here to be pushin a scoot around!

Did you check the nut was tight? Mine felt tight by hand as it had torqued onto the end of the threads of the crank since i had left the washer off. This let my variator "flap" or wobble at higher speeds once the belt rode up higher on the variator. was ok at low speeds tho. Did you have a washer under the variator nut? Make sure its been refitted if you had one. Give the outer variator a pull and see if its moving or feels loose.
Chaos is my co-pilot.

The nut is tight.... Yes, Washer is under shaft nut.... Variator does wiggle slightly. Well, I was planning on purchasing a "Race" variator soon... guess now is the time! Any suggestions? Whats the best size roller weights for a decent trade @ faster take off?

The Malossi is better at holding the ramps closed for cruising, and the Jasil is better at staying open, and in a lower gear longer. Prodigy is similar to OEM but 1.5mm bigger so maybe slightly higher top end if your engine has it. Just buy a cheap roller tuning kit. 15 bucks most places. That will save you alot later when you buy 1 set of good rollers instead of 2-3 sets.

Put in a 1500 contra spring when you do the Var. Try your stock rollers in it first. That just may tell you enough right there. You may wind up at OEM weight but new quality rollers.

Variator does wiggle slightly

Yeah my inner variator will move too, i meant the outer variator tho, the big bit that sits behind the nut, not the actual small variator that holds the rollers. If that outer variator feels loose or wobbles then theres a problem with it. It may move very slightly in & out with the crank but it shouldnt wobble on the crank.

Prob go around 1g lighter than stock rollers 1st and try that. As zombie says try a stiffer torque spring too.

On a side thought... Check your rear gear oil .
