Like overheated?
« on: July 09, 2012, 01:57:30 PM »
Took my like 200i out for a 60+ mile ride yesterday. I've got 4500 miles on it, oils and filters recently changed. Temperatures were in the mid 90's and I had a 1/4 tank. On the last leg, probably after a 15 mile stretch of 50mph it suddenly started loosing power... it made a few "sphsssss" noises from the exhaust maybe every 3-5 seconds. I pulled over, came to a stop and it died. I turned off, tried to start it... nothing. I waited about 5 minutes. Tried it again and started up just fine. Went to the closest gas station and topped off and let it cool for another 10 minutes and headed the rest of the way home with no problems. Anybody confirm if this was an overheating issue?

Hopefully your engine cutting out was only a minor issue.  My first guess would be a vapor lock.  Considering the fuel tank is right above the engine and you only had a quarter tank of fuel I would imagine the fuel injector needs cool fuel circulation. Hopefully it was only a coincidence that the hot fuel from the injector made it directly back to the hot injector.

Sounds like a fuel issue, agree with everyone else.

After reading up on it that's what I was leaning towards. I was under the assumption that FI decreases the chances of vapor lock. Guess I proved my self wrong on that. Thanks for chiming in guys. Remind me not to do longs runs on hot days with the tank below 1/4.

Pressure creates heat/ heat creates vapors. FI is More prone to vapor lock. It's the nature of the beast

I had a similar experience with 105 degree ride on the interstate. I thought it was oil related, but probably wrong.

I also have same problem. You  have identify my major problem so thanks for share this valuable information about fuel tank, engine cutting out was only a minor issue and many more.
