oil change issue
« on: July 11, 2012, 01:28:28 AM »
odo...hit 5000 so time for my  second oil change on my 2012 dt 300....heres what happened.....i changed to mobile synthetic for motorcycles/scooters.....it takes 1.5 liters for the change......roughly 50 ounces...,anyway.....rode for about 2  days  locally with no problem...plenty of pressure....but today went on a 10 mile chore.....which included some highway.....on the way home noticed a red light on the right dash indicator.....directly opposite the oil can light.....by the time i got home the red light read......"oil service".... once home .put the scooter on the center stand and checked the oil.....seemed to be ok.....checked the owners manual under oil maintenance and i believe it tells you to check the oil level without screwing the filler cap all the way in...i wound up putting another 4-5 ounces of synthetic oil in....ran it a few minutes waited a few minutes ....and checked the oil level again.....it is right up to the end of the top on the hatched portion of the  stick......

i am not loosing any oil......checked filter area as well ...as i put a new hiflo filter in.....so no oil is leaking ...pressure and power fine but the light won't go off.....as you probably know when you start the scooter the oil can light goes on for a few seconds than turns off.....this is  what its suppose to do and my scooter is doing it.....so ok there......i just can't figure out why this oil service light does not shut off.....and i am reluctant to add more oil...as i donl't want to overfill.......any suggestions on what to do about this light....

i had  absolutely no issues when i did my first break in oil change......

The oil service red light is connected to an oil sender switch that is sensitive to oil pressure. Oil pressure is directly related to resistance to flow. Your new synthetic oil might have a lower resistance to flow which is normal in synthetics and your oil pressure be reduced as well, thus, the red light.  Lower resistance to flow also means less friction and potentially better power or efficiency.  Ask the dealer if the oil sender can be reset or replaced with a less sensitive one.

The "OIL SERVICE" light needs to be manually turned off.

I have done it on mine, you need to go to the fourth screen as follow

(You will need to hold the button for 2 seconds approx.)
Press the ADJ button once and it will take you from the Odometer screen to the TRIP A screen
Press the ADJ button once and it will take you from the TRIP A screen to the TRIP B screen
Press the ADJ button once and it will take you from the TRIP B screen to "mileage since last service" that's how I call it

Once you are on this screen press both buttons "MODE" + "ADJ" until the counter is reset back to zero, the "oil service" light will be switched off.

Would this permanently turn off the light?

Pressure issues are indicated with the "oil can" symbol light.

The "oil service" is just a mile counter, it will turn on every 5000km.

you were all right....in just about everything said....simply a matter of manually re-prog the adj and mode button...called the dealer.....who pointed me to exact place to look in the owners manual....don't know how i missed it.....anyway...the scooter is running top notch it does feel more powerful...i think the oil...and the irridium plug i put in makes it feel more powerful....i spoke to the dealer...and yes its the oil can light that you really have to worry about.....if that does not turn off ....when you start the scooter ...you have problems....the oil service light is pre-programmed to turn on at 5000km intervals...as noted.....

told me not to worry about slight over fill on the oil....and just check the level.....every day for the next week or so.....so i am good and thanks for the feedback....
