Re: Nother Newbie question (center stand usage)

Ok, I've got another question that has been bothering me:   Like most scoots (and motorcyles, I guess) the GTi 300 has two "stands": a center stand and a side stand.   I almost always (even on my previous scoot) use the side stand when I park the bike (maybe I'm a little lazy?).   The only time I use the center stand is when I'm working on the bike and it's running and I don't want it taking off on me, or I'm servicing it.   But reading the (barely useful) GTi 300 owner's manual under "Starting the engine" it states:  "Place your scooter on its center stand and put the side stand up" before starting the engine.   I never even considered doing this.  Seems like overkill.   What say you all?

Because, if the factory doesnt say this and you had an accident, you can sue the company because they did not warn you in the first place. The scoot company is just playing it very safe.

Like Baddi said the main stand is used to stop the scoot flying forward if you rev the engine. I had a nasty scare not long after buying my scoot using the side stand when i was checking something and gave it a little rev, thing went forward off the stand and i was lucky not to drop it. Now i always use my centre stand unless i am making a quick stop at a shop or something. Besides the bike can be knocked over far easier on the side stand too so i feel safer leaving mine on the main stand.
Chaos is my co-pilot.

I think that is much more of a problem on the agility, as mine were knocked over by wind, when standing on the sidestand. :/
First Kymco agility 50 (2008) 11.000+ km (dead)
Second kymco agility 50 (2010) 20.000+ km. Project Fuel Injection. Stolen.
Kymco K-pipe 125 (2014) 7400 km.

A lot of riders, especially on dual sport and adventure bikes carry extra fuel in MSR or similar fuel bottles.  I've done it myself.  Those bottles are designed to carry fuel so I don't see any problem.  What may be a problem is pouring it into your fuel tank without spilling some so you may also need to carry a funnel.

baddi has it right....also just about every operator manual i have seen........tells you to use the center stand...for safety reasons mentioned ...but when you start getting into 250cc and higher as the scooter becomes heavier and if you can't park on perfectly level ground....its a bit of a challenge to get it on the center stand....so i would bet many if not most rely on the side stand....more than they admit....

my 08 hyosung ms3-250....allows you to start and idle the scooter with the side stand down..(not so on my dt 300)..so you can actually get on and off the scooter without shutting it down......again there is a safety consideration......i don't believe the newer scooters allow you to do this anymore....so that side stand must be in up position to start the scooter....

Vivo is right, Kymco is just covering their ass.

Don't rev it up on the kickstand  :D. One time I forgot the clutch in my ZX grabs a lot sooner than my Peop. It pushed the kickstand up and almost pulled me over with it  :D

I always fill the fuel tank on the main stand.

I use the kickstand almost always. I did have it fall over in grass once. The kickstand will sink into grass or even hot asphalt. Now if it's in grass or on a slant I put it on the main stand. But if you're on concrete most of the time like me, no worries about using the kickstand.
