Came across this...
« on: July 16, 2012, 02:57:05 AM »
I know someone on here will want this... I know I would've if I hadn't just bought a impact.

Hopefully this is a somewhat new find, I've never seen it before on Ebay this cheap.

@Kenho : I wouldn't buy this type of locking tool because I would be afraid to split the part of the crankcase where the bolt goes in. There's only a single bolt which is loaded sideways and acting as a lever, while the small tool can also wedge itsef in between the wheel and the bolt in a nasty way.

I've got the type of tool that Baddi has. With this tool you have two bolts carrying the load and nothing will wedge itself in anywere. I've used this tool many, many, many times (I've found my perfect variator setup by A LOT (tm) of trial and error  ;D ) and it works just perfect without putting too much stress on anything (e.g. like with an impact wrench...)

just my thoughts...

That makes sense. I have an impact, but I think I'm gonna buy the tool you guys have to use with it, just so that it's not putting a ton of stress on the gears when the impact knocks. That always scares me when I see everything turn when the impact hits...

I wouldn't use the locking tool _and_ an impact wrench at the same time. In that case you'll put almost the same stress on the crankshaft as before (because the locking tool can't be 100% rigid and impact damage only takes a very small amount of travel each time), and the locking tool and its bolts will also take a beating then...

With the locking tool a regular spanner is enough.

The problem with impact wrenches is, that this nut should be tightened to 40nm and an impact wrench will often tighten to more than that, and then there are chance of ruining the crankshaft.
The human arm can also tighten to more than that, so the best would be this tool + a momentum wrench, so you can tighten to 40nm :D

I do own a torque wrench, but even the prescribed torque feels to me like it's too tight to repeat variator disassembly as often as I want to do this....

Because it's a quite expensive and especially tiresome operation to replace the crankshaft when you've stripped the thread off, I always tighten the variator nut only as far as I feel confident with - and I use a threadlocker (Loctite 243 retainer) to prevent it from coming loose - never had a problem with it...

Ditto, I use the thread locker. I'm confident with a little less torque on the crankshaft and a little bit of loctite to hold it all together properly.
