Types of metals project
« on: July 19, 2012, 04:43:24 AM »
I have a final project I'm doing for an engineering materials class that's due Monday. Last day of class thank god. Figured there are some pretty smart fellers on here. Fart smellers too  :D. Sorry... Enough  ;D.

Anyway we need 35 different samples of different types of metals to mount to a project board. So far we have most of the basics (Steel, copper, brass, aluminum, cast iron, iridium, platinum, silver, carbide).

So, I need to come up with some more. I have a few ideas like piston rings which I read are a hardened, fine-grained cast iron. An old wrist pin which I read most of the time is a hardened mild steel. I have an old clutch disc which I'm pretty sure is a cermet (metal/ceramic). A broken mirror stem which is chrome (chromium) plated.

I have all kinds of parts and tools in my dads building, but I'm just having trouble finding other kinds of metals. I'm also planning a trip to the hardware and home improvement stores to see what I can find. If you guys have any ideas or suggestions for me it would be very helpful. Thanks  :)

pure metals or compounds/alloys?

Lead - a bullet or soldering lead

Zinc  -  roofing panels (galvanized roof), U.S. pennies, dry cell battery

Tin  -  canned goods

Magnesium  -  you can chip a piece from a magwheel.

Pewter  -  household ornaments

Molybdenum - some pistons/piston rings or the filament support of a light bulb.

Chromium - some piston rings also.

Vanadium - wrenches/tools

Mercury - your old school thermometer

Silver - you can buy cheap silver jewelry.

Tungsten  - also used for bulb filament.

Platinum - spark plug tip or jewelry

Iridium  - spark plug tip

Titanium - some use in eyeglass frames and other jewelry

Nickel and Cadmium   -  NiCad rechargeable battery

Gold   -    ;)

You can also use different kinds of coins.

Hope this helps.   :)

Heavy Metal, maybe take in an AC/DC album and nail it to the board?  :)

You can get tungsten from tig welder tips.
Chaos is my co-pilot.

Don't think they have to be pure. Would be better but damn, kinda hard and expensive to find some pure metals. Alloys or composites are good.

ok alloys...

1. Babbit metal  (tin, antimony, copper)    -   babbit bearings

2. Monel (copper, iron)    -  corrosion resistant containers, rust proof staple wires

3. Nichrome (nickel, chromium) - heating element of toasters

4. Bell metal (copper, tin)  -   casting of bells

5. Phosphor bronze (bronze with phosphorous)  -  electrical spring

6. Type metal (antimony, tin)    - used to make type for printing.

7. Sterling Silver (silver, copper, lead) - jewelry and art objects.

Hope this helps  ;)
