People s 50 4t Front Brake Disconnected?
« on: July 27, 2012, 07:02:49 PM »
Hey, I'm new to the whole scooter thing and I just bought a used 2008 Kymco People S 50 4t with about 4500km on it.  Everything seems to work just fine, except that the front brake is disconnected or something.  When I squeeze the front brake lever, there is zero resistance and I can compress it completely until it touches the rubber handle bar grip.  When I pull the brake lever the rear light turns on, but the brake pads don't move at all.

I am hoping that a repair would be as simple as reconnecting a wire, or hydraulic hose somewhere and that I can avoid taking it in to a dealer.  I would like to know if anyone else has had this problem, or if anyone knows something about the fix, because the dealers in my town are all pretty shady and I don't want to get jerked around since I'm a total noobie!

ps - is there a guide somewhere for all of the basic maintenance (fluids and the like) that I should be doing?

..well, welcome to the forum, first of all!!

..theres a circular reservoir window, on the right-hand side, just inside the handlebar cowling...

..there should be brake fluid visible in that window..

..the right brake lever depresses a piston that, hydraulically causes a set of pads in the brake caliper to compress against the shiny steel disc on the inside diameter of your front wheel...

...gots to have fluid to make the caliper squeeze the disc...

..also, just visually check the rubber tubing that goes down to the front brake...

..look for residue, where a brake fluid leak might have attracted dirt over time...

Is it a simple repair to refill the hydraulic fluid myself?  Do I need any complicated tools?  Also the "shiny disc" is a little rusty looking, should that get replaced?

If it is empyt it has a leak. Use a phillips screw driver to open the cap. Fill it, and bleed at the nipple on the caliper. Test/look for the leak. Google brake bleeding on youtube for some video help.

A little rust is normal when not being used. Just spray brake cleaner to clean. Use DOT4 rated brake fluid for motorcycles. It has a higher boiling point.
