Secondary spring change- MXU500
« on: January 15, 2008, 08:25:17 PM »
I know 500racer2 suggested to (to 400racer) to go to the EPI white spring. I thought he was just kidding ( I thought it was too stiff) but it sounds like 400racer is happy with it and maybe it would work good for me.

I have a white spring on order.

Question - Does anyone know what the stock spring spec. is? Is it more like the EPI blue spring?
<from EPI site>
Fits: 500 MXU
Color Part# 3" Load 1 3/4" Load
White KDS15 215 lbs 350 lbs
Orange KDS16 190 lbs 320 lbs
Blue KDS17 160 lbs  280 lbs

Be nice to know what stock is in comparison to what EPI has.

Thats kind of what I would have thought..

I remember when I took the stock spring out of my MXU300....I could pinch it closed (compredd it) with my fingers in one hand. The EPI spring I could barely compress it a 1/4 with both hands....much stiffer.

I imagine the white spring for the 500 would be the same.

I also ordered a Orange spring to...in case the white spring is too much.
I'll report back in week on the results.

4ooracer..
You have had the 'white" spring in for a while now. have you been riding race like courses latey and if so, is the white spring still a good choice?
Mine came in and I have the orange and I have the white spring....just debating which one to put in first and try.

500racer2....which spring did you go back to?

I love the spring, acceleration is excellent. I am not sure what racer2 has in now.

I am running the stock spring at the moment, ran it all year with no problems.  White spring was just to stiff for me and haven't tried the orange, need something to be in between the stock and white would work the best.

Thanks 500racer2.....
That is what I am thinking too.....the white spring is awefully stiff.
I think the orange is that spring you are referring to....it is stiffer than stock, but not as stiff as the white.
400racer likes the white it though....interesting.....I am thinking I will throw in the orange on first.

Hows the Rocky training going? How many raw eggs you eating a day now? :D

Seriously though....how is your two 500' s coming together...I know you changed over to a new frame on one right?

Well...I put the Orange spring in today. My first impressions is that I am going to be satisfied with it overall.
I haven't rode enough yet to really know. It was not a drastic change. The white spring I would probably really noticed on my trails at home, but I am afraid it would have been too stiff on the open long loops and trails at some of the parks I ride...the orange has a little more gear down ( I can tell the secondary is cloing up a little faster) but not drastic.
I think the orange is the right comprimise but I am not firm on it yet...I still have the white spring I can put in after I get more riding time with the orange.

The orange spring at first, did not seem much stiffer than stock. When I took the stock out, I compared it to the new springs. The white was obviously stiffer than stock, but the orange was only stiffer when you compressed it down a bit. I decided to put in the orange since I was running out of time...I'll go with it for awhile and report back with more data.

Did not get to do any carb adjusts this weekend like I hoped. We are conviced though that the needle jet needs adjusted (move the clip). It definitly is running rich. The Main is still up in the air . The guy who ordered it was out of town a dwe couldn't find it anywhere.
We are first going to move the clip on the nedle and see how it runs on the low end after we lean it a bit.....then we will put the 148 main and see how she does overall.

Yeah.....I still want to try the white spring...just need to get a spring compressor when I tackle it...(Used 20 tie wraps to keep the orange spring compressed long enough to get the nut back on... ;D)

Let me know what you think of that orange spring, may switch to it and try it out, training coming together as much as my quads are.  One done, one in pieces, waiting for pieces.

I got to ride good bit this weekend (finally). The Orange spring is really a great improvement over stock. It is not a night or day switch but if this really is a great setup now..
I got a tell you, my 500 seems to get faster and quicker everytime I ride it . It was really responsive on the trails and really poured on in the open. The thing seemed to really be making horsepower today. I let my son ride the 500 around a little in the parking lot and he would just start rolling and he would punch the throttle just a little it and he would spin the tires and sling the back end  a round. It really looked powerful when he was doing that. Those 26" XTR's are no problem to turn!
Man , that AC pipe sounded like a race car too...eeks..I didn't know it sounded that loud from behind. Sounded bad a%% for sure though ;D

I still want to try the White spring though just so I will know how it does...not sure when I'll get to it though.
Ken...you said the white spring was too stiff for you....what is the effect on the track? Loses top end?
