Sava Tyres
« on: August 22, 2012, 12:23:13 PM »
Anyone got any experience using Sava tyres? Are/were they any good?

Its not Kymco related really but im looking to put my old Vespa on the road in the next few weeks and these seem to get good reviews.... http://www.lambrettaspares.com/spares/tyres-and-inner-tubes/sava-tyre,-350:10,-monsum-road,-mc20,-also-a-mud-and-snow-winter-tyre/mbu0583.html?sa=X&ei=arg0UMOXN4eDhQeuxoC4Aw&ved=0CDAQgwgwAQ

Just wondered if anyone had used the brand before and how they found them?

I need an all round tyre for wet & dry days and these seem to be one of the best rated in most reviews i read.
Chaos is my co-pilot.

From my experience, the MC16 works better in the wet then the MC20 which has that rain pattern.
Some people on various vespa forums might confirm that since some got their scoots with MC20 as
the 1st tire.

I've ridden with those in the wet and even some snow, it's a very popular choice around here.
The only thing is, they're fine for about 1,5-2 years tops, and then turn to plastic.

You'll never wear them out.
You can get the MC16 (and most other Sava tires) in racing medium and racing soft compounds too.
They're usually twice as expensive.

The MC29 is a great tire too, a lot more grip on dry tarmac, but probably not as good in the wet as the
MC16. Similar at best.

If you can afford to change tires once a year, you'll save a lot of money with MC16 compared to other
brands.

If you can't - spend more on Michelin City Grips and you're good for a longer period of time.

I have used 3-4 sets on Beverly and made a mistake switching to Continental with Kymco.
Used them also on other scoots.
They are great in wet, but EXTREMELY sensitive to white lines, much more than any other tire I had on my bikes.

p.s. Sava is a river in Slovenia/Croatia/Bosnia/Serbia, approximate length 1000 kms.

You were happy with MC28 (I assume you used those) on the BV?

I never liked any of their 16" tires, and the MC16/20/29 weren't available in 16".

It's strange.. considering how good those 12-13" tires are.. their summer car tires suck, and the winter
tires are great.

+1 re: white lines though, it's like riding on snow.

Thanks Cortez, just had a quick lok online for info on the MC16's but it looks like they only come in 12" or 13" where my Vespa wheels are 10" so they wont fit  :-\

Same story on the City Grips too, they only come in 12"-16" sizes.

Axy they sound pretty good then, especially in the wet/damp. After losing my front end on a bend on the Kymco last year i realised NEVER to try economise on tyres, saving a few quid is nothing compared to saving your life. I swapped out the Kymco tyres for Bridgestones that week and never looked back. We get a fair ammount of wet days here so i really dont want a slick type racing tyre, i need one that performs good on wet days too.

Looks like the MC20 may still be the best bet  :-\ (if i avoid white lines  :D )

Oh, damn, at 10" there's probably a lot worse then MC20, even from Sava too.

Just get them and see how you like them.
Check if 'racing medium' compound is available.

That's what I'd use on the front.
Normal compound on the rear.

I think they only come in either Racing Soft or Road Medium - Hard, least thats the only ones i saw  :-\

I spoke to the guy at SIP in Germany last night and he reckoned the medium-hard were my best option for all round daily use. Also recommended them and said they were good tyres. This backs up what another Vespa rider i kinda know said, it was him that originally put me onto the MC20's in the 1st place.

Think i'll prob give them a go, whats the worst that can happen right  :D. Just want to spend a little longer tonight once i get home from work to do a little more research on them 1st to be sure. They only cost £30 since its a 10" wheel so i guess its not so expensive to swap them out if they feel dodgy.

You should not compare them with the best tires there are. Compare them across the range.
I would say ContiTwists I have now are close to the bottom, just a tad above "suicidal" Chinese plastic tires.
If you consider the whole spectrum from there to the best tire, MC28s would be probably "7 %" worse than the best tire, making them a good value for the money considering that they cost 40 % less than Pirellis or Michelin.

Avoid white lines like plague.

Also, Sava factory is fully owned by Goodyear-Dunlop, since 2006.
