My bike dilemma. Not Kymco or even scooter related....
« on: August 26, 2012, 11:27:48 PM »
Was bored this weekend, Kymco running great so no need to touch that,Vespa at painters so couldnt touch that, so dug out my old bike and gave it a revamp. I got this bike in 1984 when i was 13and had it ever since. Not really used it since the 90's apart from a few weeks around 2000, so its been sat in my mother-in-laws garage since then. Saw it last week and it looked all sad and a bit tired so i had to bring him home and clean him up :D

After a weekend of stripping, polishing (lots of polishing), powder-coating and buffing he now looks great again, i think so anyway. He's 28 years old now but looks better than my sons 4 year old bike. Cost me £115 back in '84, just stuck him on Fleabay and within 5 mins i had 4 watchers and a guy messaged me offering £280 for him :o

Now i got a dilemma, do i keep him or go ahead and sell him?  ??? Much as i want to keep it im trying to be realistic and say i wont ever use it much so sell him on and let him go enjoy himself. On the other hand i have had it since a kid and he does look good now  ???

What would you do?

Heres some before and after pics.....

Nice work. Just keep it and go cruising around the neighborhood.  You will never get what its worth if you sell it.  I broke many a lade back seatpost in my day.  What is that, a Patterson?

280 quid!?

That's gotta be a down payment on a Super 8. Then with all the cash you're saving eschewing tobacco, you're in like Flynn.

Its a British made bike, Raleigh Aero Chrome Burner. Back in the day it was the buisiness over here, every kid wanted one but not every kid got one. I mustve just been a good kid, or good at bugging my mum till she gave it  :D

If i remember it cost £115 new in 1984 but without those mag wheels, bars, seatpost, pedals, seat etc which i added over the years. All in it prob owes me £200-£250 so i am getting back what i put into it.

Im thinking i may let him go now ive slept on it. Much as i dont want to i cant really justify keeping it and i guess prices are high now cos all those kids who didnt have one back in the day are now my age now and want to relive their youth by buying one now. Prices may go up but im guessing theyre almost peaked cos once all these folk have their mid-life crisis then they price will drop. Offered it to my 15 yr old before i knew its worth and he laughed, "Why would i want a BMX dad?", whos laughing now.......

Just sold it for the £280  :'(

Makes sense, im happy, sellers happy so he's getting packed up tonite. Courier quoted me £10.50 to deliver it so i made more than expected too.

Also............i just had a call from my spray-painter to say my Vespa is finished, 2 wks ahead of schedule and £50 under his quote!!! Yeehaaa! Taking a half-day from work and going to collect it. Just as well i sold the bike cos i need the garage space now for Vespa re-assembly.

Life is all good  ;D

Women are like cinemas.

I normally have to pay to enter them, but sometimes I force my way in through the back door.
