Stuck Variator Nut - Help Please
« on: September 03, 2012, 08:36:06 PM »
Can't get the 17mm nut loose. Left liquid wrench on it overnight. Used an air then an electric impact wrench while holding the var still with tool. later heated the nut with a torch. Still no luck. Cracked off one of the two holes that you put the var holding tool in.  Not sure what to do next. Any tips?

would try heat again, then a spanner wedged in the case and the variator to stop it turning, then a big bar on the nut

The nut is so tight I think I would bust the case if I tried that.  Going to keep soaking the nut with anti-seize fluid over night and will try more heat again tomorrow. Thanks.

Sometimes if you try to tighen stuck nuts etc instead of loosen them it can free it. Worked for me in the past on other stuck things. Then again it could just make it tighter. I would leave it to soak overnight in a good penetrating fluid, Plusgas works well for me, not sure if you can get it over there tho.

If it comes to it you might need to get a dremmel or hacksaw and cut it off and just fit a new one. If you can cut it near to tbe crank as poss and then chisel it to split it then it should come off without damaging the crank threads.
