rear tire for a Super 8
« on: September 13, 2012, 01:45:20 AM »
The Super 8 150 comes with a 120/80-14 Chen Shin rear tire.  I have not been able to find another rear tire in that size.  My choices are to get another OEM tire or use a 120/80-14 front tire.  Any suggestions?

My OEM tire has nearly 8,000 miles on it so I'm happy with that but it is pretty hard and doesn't have the best traction in wet conditons.

Never use a front tire for the rear. Never.  If you really really can't find a rear tire, just get OEM and just ride slow... ;)

I didnt know front and rear tyres were any different, unless sizes where different  :-\

My Vespa uses the exact same tyre on front AND rear, same size, same tread pattern, EXACTLY the same tyre, even has a spare which is also the same tyre. Thats how they leave the factory ???

Yes on some scooters, but other scooters that have different tire sizes for front and rear is because the rear have a different load rating than the front. Some the same sizes for front and rear but different load rating. Some tires are labelled "front" or "rear" when you buy them.

Why is that?  I know people use rear tires on the front and car tires on the rear.  Why would a front tire not work on the rear of a low powered scooter like the super 8?  Not saying I'm going to do it, just wondering why.

Not to discount what vito wrote

but you might call John at motoamore (Heidenau importer/owner)... 408.295.3004
and ask about this being ok -

http://www.motorcyclemaniacstore.com/product/42346/heidenau-k66-120x80-14-front-k661208014

VERY knowledgeable, used to work on scoots, before tire business took off.
He recommended this tire for my People 50 (different size of course) but same issue, needed it for the rear but noted as a front tire.
He said in my case (and most likely yours) this would be fine.

I did double check with Josh at scootergarage and he stated if John said it would work, should be fine...

GL!

Cars are different from motorcycles or scooters. Cars have a near 50/50 weight distribution while motorbikes have most of the weight at the rear.

The front tire on a motorcycle/scooter is generally more narrow and has a less aggressive tread pattern. Unlike the rear tire, the front tire handles the majority of the bike's braking and is designed to optimize steering and handling. The rear tire on a motorcycle/scooter carries the bulk of the weight of the bike itself, as well as the weight of the rider and passenger, if there is one. The rear tire is designed to carry these loads, and additionally, the extreme load of acceleration. Rear tires generally have a more aggressive tread than the front tires. This beefier tread optimizes traction. Where the front tire design emphasizes braking and steering, the rear tire grips the pavement and pushes the bike forward.  Of course, you can use the front tire as the rear tire, but just think of the consequences.

Oh, I didn't mean anything on that bro...peace... Regarding the 2t oil, our country has lots of 2t bikes and almost all gas stations have 2t oil. We have Shell, Caltex, etc. and all are good. It might be a different scenario in your place. Here's another popular one...
