People 300i Transmission oil Change???
« on: September 13, 2012, 07:42:46 AM »
Transmission oil actually changed frequently as the manual says? (because the car almost never changed the transmission oil.)  ???

If anyone knows how often you should change the oil, I would appreciate. My kymco already has 600 miles and soon I'm going to change the engine oil, but I wonder if the transmission oil change is needed now.  :)

It's ALWAYS wise to follow any manufacturers recommendations for service intervals. I find, for me, I just change my fluids on just about every thing I own at 2500ml intervals...easy to remember...25 50 75. 8 oz's of tranny (CVT) fluid came out of mine. I find a mustard/ketchup bottle from the dollar store with a piece of battery vent tubing (if you don't have some just bum some from a bike shop) works pretty good for refilling the tranny (just don't rush it). The book calls for oil/filter/tranny at 3Kmls...why question it? I've been using "Shell Rotella T 15/40" Dino oil (used to be called Diesel oil) and it is now rated JASO MA...(one of the stringest criteria for motorcycle oil) in ALL of my bikes for years now and HIGHLY recommend it. PS: DEFINITELY change the tranny oil at 600ml, that's where 90% of the "splooge" came out of my '12 GTi300 and another 10% at 1Kmls. The "splooge" factor of my engine was about 70% at 600 mls and 30% at 1Kmls. More service is ALWAYS better than less...unless you don't care about the longevity of your Kymco...My oil changes have been and will be 600, 1K (w/fltr), 3K (w/fltr), 5K (w/fltr), and then on to my 2500ml intervals. Overkill?...not to ME!...I LOVE my GTi300!

Just follow manufacturer's recommendation. Gear oil is changed at a longer interval. Just check level of gear oil when changing engine oil.

The GT300i requires both an engine & transmission oil changed @ 600 miles. Just had both done last week by the dealer. Still using dinosaur/mineral oil & will change over to Synthetic @ 1500 miles.

Thank you all for helping me understand how important the transmission oil change when I get the engine oil filter that I buy online, quickly change both oils the same day.

I thought let the dealer change my oil kymco, but better I do and I get cheaper, sometimes I do not trust if they do things right, the only thing that worries me is if the warranty on my kymco is lost or no, so why I do the maintenance myself? my kymco has two years warranty hope not affected, but anyway thank you all for answering this important topic. :)

Vivo...whoa! Manufacturers recommendations are oil/filter/tranny every 3Kmls. Tranny is NOT a longer interval. If you check the oil (by letting it drip out the filler?) you will have WAY too much gear oil in there (juat as bad, and maybe worse, than too little). My tranny (CVT) takes 8 oz's.

PS: Kenneth76...ask the dealer about doing your own service and what you need to keep for reference. I believe you can do your own oil and tranny (simple) and save a hunk of change on labor and not void your warranty...and get familiar with your GTi.

Tranny oil IS longer interval. Engines have to deal with a lot more heat/stress than gear oil, so the engine oil breaks down quicker. Also, contaminants like soot and dirt particles are much more likely to mix with the engine oil than with the gear oil in a gearbox, which is a relatively self-contained environment. Some manufacturers will say to change gear oil every oil change, some will say every other engine oil change and some will say twice a year.  Also, you don't check gear oil by letting it drip out... you use a bent wire like this...

Thanks again, I will consider all your suggestions, I'm actually not worry about the warranty, if I make my kymco maintenance on my own.

We have to remember that it is a kymco. Quality and Reliability. ;)

The Owner's Manual  for the People GTi 300 recommends that you change the engine oil every 3000 miles (after the intial 600 mile change). See p. 27. See also pp. 29-30.  The Manual recommends that you change the transmission oil at the same intervals.  See p.27. See also p. 32.

The transmission only takes .21L of oil.  I use synthetic gear oil.  It only takes 10 minutes at most and it is an easy and inexpensive procedure.

I like others use intervals of 2,500 miles between changes.

I did the same for the van, and the car,. van 240,000 miles,  car still new, 5,000 miles ready for change to syn. oil,.

Vivo "Hero Member"...just wondering...do you know more than the Kymco engineers are letting on...should we NOT do what the manufacturer suggests for service intervals?

I'm not saying NOT to do what manufacturer suggests... That's why they are called "suggestions" or "recommendations"... These are proper guides for those people who are totally blank on what to do...

I was talking from decades of experience rebuilding car engines and exposure to gears and oils. I've tried a lot of these oils and its effects and has garnered some knowledge that I want to share but not insist on. With my scooter,  I certainly did not follow manufacturer's recommendation to have my first oil changed after 300 kms., I changed my oil the moment I got the scoot (mineral high detergent oil). Also did not follow the "recommended" tire pressure, and the "recommended" battery size, the "recommended" headlight bulb...

Ok, now I'm curious.  How did you deviate from the "recommended" tire pressure, and why?

The Super 8 rear suspension is really hard and has a bouncy ride that shakes my internal organs very bad ;D. I just lowered the pressure to around 29 or 28 and it rides fine but still the tire is up. Anyway, I don't ride on freeways and usually have an average speed of 20-30 mph. Front tire around 26 psi. I don't want to change to softer shocks because I still like the handling of the stiffer stock shocks. For freeway rides, I pump to higher tire pressures 30-32. I check my tire pressures everyday and have a portable 12v air compressor.
