Inacurate Speedomoter/anyone got a fix it idea?

It's my 2nd year now and I've gotten all the bells and whistles I wanted to customize it to my satisfaction and I'm really enjoying the bike.  Now on to more practical matters.  Kymco says there's an agreement between companies to put the speedomoter 10-20K an hour faster than is the reality.  I don't need someone else to help me control my speed. I'm 56 and had 1 ticket in 40 years.  I went out with the Mrs. in her car and with the aid of signals figured out that starting around 80kph(Canada-kilometers) I'm faster about 10K.  Up to 120 KPH it seems to be about 10kph different.  Now I know we drive fast in Quebec but sometimes I have to hit 140kph just to keep up with the faster traffic. I figure they must be doing about 70 miles per hour (120kph) give or take a few.  Has anyone out there figured out a way to fix this problem?  Please let me know.

Apparently this is an inherent issue,  sometimes with most brands.  In this case,  you might
let us know what model you have.  Grandvista's have a hub gear wheel while Xcitings have a Magnetic
Pick-up.  I had continuous issues with my Xciting until someone mentioned a redesigned sensor on this Forum.  I have been able to adjust the new sensor to within 2 mph over the GPS.  I had so many issues,  I bought a dedicated GPS for this bike.  It's so useful if you ever break down in a remote area and end up calling the AAA Service Center clear across the country.  I'm afraid you may just have to compensate or estimate your difference and just ride that way.    Urbestfriend....

I had heard years ago that all speedometers are calibrated to read slightly faster than the vehicles speed. The reason for this i was told was to stop people suing the manufacturer if the speedo was a little out and they got a ticket for speeding. The manufacturers figure its better to under-calibrate them so as to keep your actual speed below the speed the speedometer shows, in case the speedometer is a little off.

May be a total myth but its what i heard from a few folk now over the years

It's a 2008 Xciting 500Ri and as far as the myth, I asked Kymco directly and Sabrina was nice enough to confirm that there is an agreement between the motorcycle companies to calibrate the speedos 10 to 20K faster than you are really doing.  I made an appointment for next Monday to ride a dynamometer and as they give me the correct speeds I'll put a small tape arrow on my speedo. so I can be accurate. I would however like to hear more about the dedicated GPS.  That sounds pretty interesting to me.  Please give me more info when you have a minute.

My Peoples 200 runs 7% happy, so just make the simple calculations, if it reads 100K you'd be doing 93K etc. It's not rocket science. On the other hand if you need absolutely correct readings get a small handheld or pocket type GPS, you can even plug it into your 12v with an adaptor and get correct speed and location anytime.

I can tell now from the sound of my eng. what speed I'm traveling at (within 5 MPH).

Dedicated means it's just for that vehicle.  I think it was around $99.00.  You know...one available from any store.  This one is a Garman NUVI.   I modified the GPS bracketry with the support
post on the "Kymco Logo"center plate on the handlebars and attached the bracket that holds
the GPS itself to a Waterproof plastic box.  I painted the inside of the cover black leaving a
clear area for the digital speed reading on the GPS.  (Once the Maps are visible,  push the
"Speed" location in the lower corner.  This changes the screen to a MPH data screen that also registers
several trip points).   I also installed a 12VDC outlet on the dash.  I've got quite a set-up and I
haven't needed to remove it because it's rather indiscrete.  If you are really interested, let me know
and I can give you some photo direction.  There have been various threads on mounting GPS'ssss.
You can buy a GIVI holder,  but there are a million ways you can do this cheaper.

Thanks to everybody for the advice and Urbestfriend, I'm going to do a bit of research on the garman Nuvi and if I decide to go this route I'll be in touch with you.  Appreciate it.
