CELP Light

Today after a long hard ride (about 150mi.) I was coming home at a little over 65mph, just slightly over the red line.  I noticed the CELP light blink a few times.  I slowed to 60 but it kept blinking irregularly.  At 55mph it went quiet but as soon as I increased speed to 60, it blinked.  I went the rest of the way, about 20 miles, staying in the low 50's without seeing it come on and you know I was watching.  I got no other indication.  Oil and temp. were OK.  At least there was no temp or oil warning light coming on.  The Yager was running strong with no other indication of trouble.  Until I started for home the speeds were from 20 to 50 mph all day.  On the way home I was alone and picked up the speed to 65mph as previously indicated.  I know this is not normal since I frequently travel at that speed but this is the first time I saw the CELP light blink.  It does blink when I start up.  Should I take it to the dealer or do any of you have any suggestions?  I hate to bring it in to the dealer even though it is still under warranty.  It has less than 3000 miles on it.  The last oil change of syn was at 2000 miles.

"Check Engine"? 

I dunno. Did you check the fluid levels?  I'd start there, anyway.

The "check engine" light is part of your scoot's onboard diagnostics (OBD) system. Since that is connected to all sensors, it could be anything from ignition timing, fuel mixture, defective sensor, etc. An engine diagnostic tool/code reader can determine what the trouble is. The computer has a trouble code that can identify the source of the problem. An experience from another rider might not give you an accurate solution to your problem because the next step to the check engine light is diagnosis. 

A small portable code reader can be a good investment for this.

Fluids were good last night and still good today.  Where so I get a code reader and about what do they cost?  I have the manual and it does have the codes.  The light did not come on this AM on a short slow ride.

Use your on board code reader function. Ign off, throttle wide open, ign on, wait for CELP light to blink on for two seconds, count flashes after and call me in the morning! Seriously, send report back here and we will give you the interpretation.

Karl, I'm glad you chimed in.  After looking at the manual, I followed it and got a code 7.  7 is inlet air thermo-sensor (failure code P0110).  I have no idea what that means.

You might have a faulty Air Temperature Sensor. This sensor monitors the temperature of air entering the engine, sends signal to the computer which in turn balances the air/fuel mixture. Causes of damage to this sensor include backfires in the intake maniford, age, carbon contamination, heat, etc. or it could be just a loose wiring or poor connection. Flashing may mean a poor response of the sensor. Check the connections and/or replace the sensor.

Where is it?  What does it look like?  I haven't checked the air filter, is that related?  BYW, getting the  code was  pretty easy.

I don't have a Yager but that thing is usually on the air intake manifold. It looks like a sender switch / plug with wires connected to it.


Here are examples of the air temp sensor...

Thanks, I'll be travelling for the next 10 days plus.  I ordered a new air filter (I'm a little late changing it) which I will change when I get  home.  I should be able to see the sensor when I change the filter.  On the internet it says that there should be continuity between the 2 wires so I'll check it then.

Fish, you will not be able to see it servicing the air filter. Ya gotta take the seat off, two 10 mm nuts, take the tub under the seat out, 4 ten mm bolts and one #3 phillips screw and THEN you can see the throttle body and all the sensors.

Thanks Karl & Vivo.  The Yager is now asleep it it's own little enclosure with the battery tender plugged in.  I'll see it again on Oct. 12 or 13.  That's when I'll get back to work on it.

Lately (since I adjusted the free play of the throttle), I noticed that when the ignition switch is turned on (engine hasn't started yet), the CELP light blink once (long) then blinks 3 times (faster).
As soon as the engine is running, the light stays off.
Should I care? ;-)

Ludo, you probably need to check your work with the throttle.  Look at the blink codes on the last page of the manual.

I did and checked the codes on the manual.
Sure enough, it's something to do with the throttle position.
My question is if the light is not on while I am riding, should I worry?
