I've unleased the beast... now what?
« on: October 08, 2012, 01:07:25 AM »
So, this weekend, I cut the CDI, put in the smooth boss and the larger jet.  However, it's still really sluggish from a dead stop and going up hill.  I now have a few questions:

1) Would a performance exhaust help?

2) Would an open air filter help?

3) Would changing the roller weights help?

4) If I do change the rollers, how much will it effect my top end speed?

I'm not looking to win races, but I would like to be able to get out of my own way. LOL  I know I'm used to a 2 stroke and that thing hauled azz for a 50cc and ate hills alive.  Is there anyway to get it like that?

try 85 or 90 jet
and open air filter
with 5.5 grm rollers or 6 grm
should not change your top end at all.
If you dont care to try open air filter try just a 85 jet and 5.5 rollers.

Nice.  Thanks!  What about the exhaust?  Will that help, at all?

Also, should the rollers be 15x12 or 16x13mm?

You just can't compare the power of a 2-stroke unless you have a bigger engine... All those mods you are considering will help, yes...

Exhaust will make no difference except to make it louder. Imo the open filter and bigget jet makes little difference either, apart from agaim making it louder. They may offer very slight gains but any increase in performance is very very slight on a 4t 50cc, imo. Still i run both a Leo Vince exhaust and a k&n style filter with a 92 main jet, mainly because i prefer the look of it over stock.

Lighter rollers will help uphill and take off speed, especially is coupled with a stiffer torque spring and stiffer clutch springs. I use 5.1g rollers, race variator, with a shortened boss (36.8mm instead of stock 38mm), 1500rpm torque and 1500rpm clutch springs, with the Leo and K&N filter, dont think i can improve my accelleration and more tbh. I get a decent take off and what i think is good accelleration to 40mph. Tops out around 43-44mph on flats, hits 50mph downhills/slopes. Using 5.5g rollers i get slightly slower accelleration but gain around 2-4mph on flats, normally 45-48mph.

Hills will always be the problem for these scoots cos they have poor torque but on my set up i rarely, if ever drop under 30mph uphill where before as stock i would drop to 20-23mph on some.

Yeah rollers are def 16x13, buy decent ones tho, especially if going lighter and tuning cos the faster rpms will wear them a lot quicker.
Chaos is my co-pilot.

Nice - I was told that 4t's weren't as fast on take off, but I really wasn't prepared for the difference, I think.  I'll def buy good rollers and I think I'll probably get the sport variator, too.  I'm looking at the technigas chrome muffler and thinking about the open air filter. My biggest conern with the open air filter is that since I'm an year round rider, won't rain and snow and mud kind of mess up my carb and engine?

I'm gonna investigate the torque springs and clutch spring, too.  I don't mind losing a little bit on the top end because I have some pretty serious hills that I need to get up on my way to work everyday.  So, I def need to get that low end power.

I will - I'm kind of anal about putting bits back that I take off.  I figure that the engineers that designed would not have made the company spend money to put them on if they didn't absolutely need to.  hehehehe

I ride all year too, not been a problem at all. Just fit a cover on the filter.Mine came with one but it was no good in rain and i broke down1st big shower when the filter got soaked so i took it off and made a better one from the end of a 2L Coke bottle, never had an issue since  ;D
