SHE RUNS AGAIN!!
« on: June 13, 2009, 07:08:09 PM »
AHA! I finally figured out my week long puzzle as to why my zx50 would not start and am sorta happy at the outcome , i say sorta because you will see what happens as my father always told me (everything i touch turns to sh*t lol)

these are the things i covered.

New coil (oem)
New CDI (oem)
New Plug
I also found a new discovery for the zx50, the electric start relay works off a 1985 Yamaha Razz!
it doesnt actually clip in perfect but it fits in far enough to work and not fall out.

After all those new things i figured i would check the exaust..the exaust was packed totally closed so i cut open the exaust on the backside, scraped and air-tooled all carbon out, welded the muffler back together and replaced it on the machine.

first kick it fired right up!
but i forgot to put the fan and shroud back on so  i placed the fan on, screwed in the bolts and placed the cover back.
engine now would not even budge, not kick over, starter sounded froze...guess what?

i just screwed bolts (which i thought were the fan bolts) right into my stator coils and now i need a new stator because i broke ONE small wire. now i dont get spark again
a 70.00 mistake by using bolts that were too long..

hopefuly this helps someone else before they do the same thing.

im positive after i get my new stator (which i may try tgb if i cant find a local shop carrying kymco)
she will fire up again! wish me luck!
*************************************

OK so i bought a stock gy6 6 pole stator and installed it, GREAT spark now but the engine starts up, runs about 15 seconds and shuts off so the puzzle still aint over!

check the fuel "petcock". it is vacum opperated, off the intake manifold. you may have kinked or dislodged the vac. line. also check/ change the fuel filter.

fuel filter looks good, i sucked on the vacuum line and it pushes the gas thru the filter pretty nicely.
I removed petcock, cleaned it up and also sucked on that valve to see if it opens and closes, seems to work fine but she still wont run for more than about 5 seconds at idle then just dies.
Im goin to try to just remove the whole oil tank filter and all and really scrub it out buy a new oil filter and then use some 2 stroke green injector oil instead of the 2 cycle.
after that i hope it works.
I have tried adjusting the air screw and it did speed up a bit but i think either my mix is way wayyy off or it jumped time somehow but my key looked brand new still when i pulled the stator off so im puzzled!!! lol

You said a gy/6 stator. 6 pole? I think the zx is 5 pole I will check. This will change the timing. I don't think it would run at all though. The mixture setting is Critical however. Turn the air screw out 1-1/2 turns keep turning out until you get a steady idle. use the speed screw to compensate until you get the fastest idle you can w/ the air screw. once you reach the peak rpm, turn the air screw 1/8 turn out. set the idle rpm using the speed screw. If you cannot get a good idle I would re-check the jets. there are MANY times i have had to go back and clean the carb a second time. on an afterthought, check the magnets on the flywheel possiable one has come loose. it will appear to stay in place, but if it has shifted it will change your timing a couple of degrees. still sounds like a fuel prob. though

Ya id appreciate is Zombie.
Ya i put A GY-6  6 pole in it cuz the dude at the shop said that the 2 stroke kymco is basically the same as the older gy-6 ( how sure he was i dont know) but it does spark good, i removed the flywheel again to check the magnets..all seem ok
Im takin a break then going in the carb again! lol

Yea dude the 2001 zx/50 super fever (mine) is five pole. I dont know how a 6 pole would work! Need someone smarter than me to figure this one out. I'll look around to find out what I can

I haven't actually pulled mine apart to check, but the one they show in the service manual is a 6-pole.
