Hi fishfindr,
I live in Alabama. The permit allows me to carry a concealed weapon on my person and in my vehicle. Application is through the county sheriff's office with background check and "reputable acquaitances" as references. It is re-neweable every year for $20.00.

Thank goodness I live in one of the free states, (Tennessee). We have a hand gun carry permit. I can carry concealed or on the hip. We must pass a back ground check and take a hand gun training course.

The permit is good for 4 years and costs $50 to renew.
