I'd take a 400cc+ bike with gears over a scooter any day of the week. But like blue said, no insurance, no tags, and no license. I spend $20 on gas about every 3 weeks and $12 on oil every 6 weeks... I'm not complaining  ;D

I would seriously consider a motorcycle and have been looking at getting a Royal Enfield...love the classic post-WWII look.  And at 500cc, it is light and economical.  However, I have a scoot because most of my commuting is in the city and that much shifting would be a pain.  Also I have storage for my paperwork, the faring protects my clothes, and it is easy to maneuver.  Then there is insurance.....$75 a year vs. $200+ for equivalent sized engine motorcycle - 250cc.

I had a serious lumbar disc rupture with large extruded fragment into L5/S1 which has left me with foot-drop in the left foot so changing gears on a motorcycle would not be physically possible. The
XC500Ri takes me to the same speeds and with the same body leans through curves that a motorcycle would. I do miss the ability to down shift on hills and through traffic but for the most part I love to ride and I'm happy with Twist and Go.
