Off topic question for Cortez about DT vs NC700x
« on: November 02, 2012, 03:44:30 PM »
I know you've driven the NC700x, and I'm greatly tempted to sell the DownTown and my other bike for just the NC. What were your opinions on it vs the DT? How is the handling and cornering ability vs the DT? Is it easy to handle around town? How do you think it stacks up as a commuter? How is the seat and leg comfort vs the DT? I realize a lot of this is subjective, but as we are the same height and weight, I'm curious as to was your experience was. I should probably arrange a test drive, but just not ready to deal with a push salesman and some dealers around here get a little weird about test driving.

I just wrote for 20 minutes and accidentally closed the browser..  >:(

What it comes down to, regardless of your riding experience, the NC700X is something
to experience since it's a bike that feels a lot different (at least to me) then what you'd
expect from that kind of a bike just looking at the specs sheet.

But to answer your questions quickly..
NC's suspension is longer and softer, bigger wheels do a lot for comfort too so
there's no doubt the NC is more comfortable then the DT300. The seat on the
DT is better, of course, but that doesn't do much given the huge suspension
differences.

The difference between the 30hp and 50hp might seem like a lot, but because of
the extra weight, the NC is hardly any faster around 40-60mph speeds where most
spend a lot of time. It's got a lot more torque, but it runs out of steam fast and
you need to short shift all the time. Not a problem, but don't expect mind blowing
performance.

The NC is somewhat practical because of the storage space, but for around town,
I'll never say that ANY motorcycle with a manual transmission is more practical then
ANY scooter out there.

I'd rather ride the hugeass Burgman 650 around town then any tiny motorcycle, just
to get rid of shifting gears. If you ride 2 up a lot, that's even more important. As smooth
as I was on my Kawasaki (ninja 650R), I always bumped helmets with my passenger and
my arms always hurt after a while (because of all the pressure from behind). On the DT
you don't even know that you have a passenger behind you.

I got rid of the 650R because of that since you end up spending most of the time around
town anyways unless the motorcycle is only a toy for you, and it is (was) my only mode
of transport so it had to go. Sold the small 125cc scooter too and then ordered the DT300
hoping that it would replace both well.

It sure replaced the smaller scooter in every way, but I miss the 70hp engine from my
Kawasaki.. and the gearbox for touring/spirited riding.

THe NC700X DCT might be best of both worlds, but you gotta decide for yourself if you're
happy with a 48hp engine on such a heavy motorcycle, regardless of rather fat torque curve.

I was blown away the first time I rode it, but you get used to it very fast (since it's
very easy to ride, like a freaking bicycle, the weight NEVER shows), but 2nd and 3rd
ride had me bumping the engine off the rev limiter and thinking how it could use 5 or 10
hp more.

(There's supposed to be a bigger / more powerful NC coming next year)

Take it for a ride, but make it a longer one.
After a 5 minute ride, you'll sign on the dotted line right away, it needs a longer ride.

As for me.. I dunno.. I might drop down to a 125-150cc scoot again, and buy a big bike
again, but I'm eyeballing the MyRoad 700i too..

Did I miss anything?

Thanks, that really helps. I've been debating for a few weeks, but think I'll hold off on buying it. I mostly just commute on the DT, with an occasional fun ride. Hard to beat the DT for that. I know the NC is not technically an adventure bike, but it looks like enough guys have thrown tires on and it seems fine for easy dirt roads. It would be nice to have one bike that commutes, handles long stretches of pavement, and dirt roads. It would open up a whole new world of riding for me as I live in a place with lots of lonely roads, and even lonelier dirt roads. This seemed the closest, but just a little lacking in the seat, and suspension. I like the DCT tranny, but for and additional $2K US, that seems too steep for just ABS and DCT. I don't really want to maintain 3 bikes. Too bad someone doesn't build a light "adventure scooter". The BMW c600 (the other bike that has me drooling) would be a good platform to start with....other than the extra maintenance headaches that seems to accompany BMW.

I wouldn't take the NC offroad, after a test ride, you'd probably come to the same
conclusion. For a mostly on-road bike with SOME offroad capability I'd be looking at
the (now discontinued) Transalp (will be cheap because of that next year) or a Vstrom.

Both of those are more powerful and can do some normal offroading.

Other then the low center of gravity (which is nice), the NC screams road bike when
you ride it. Now I gotta try the NC700S though..

The suspension on the NC700X is very cheap, but works great when not overloaded,
which will happen very soon when you get off the road.

Even some bumpy roads make it feel uneasy.

It's not as crappy as the rear shock on my kawasaki 650 though..  :o

I have been thinking about the Vstrom 650 too. It just pales in comparison to the DT for commuting. It's on my short list if I decide that I can afford, and want to maintain 3 bikes. Which, I probably can't, and don't. Of course, I don't ride my WR450 much any more, it's possible I'm hanging on to that for more nostalgic reasons.

I had a 2007 BMW F650GS. It got 65 MPG's and was the perfect bike.

Sometimes it was a tiny dirt bike, other times it was a 2 up tourer.

Great for commuting (with a top box). A little steep for new price...

Never owned a BMW, but love the C600, F700, and F800. I have heard that the maintenance can be $$ and some bikes can only be serviced at dealers...At least if you want the service light turned off.

Swap that thing for a low maintainance WR250R and you're good to go!
Just the money you save on taking care of the 450F should be sufficient for
the NC700X.  ;D

I would never buy it. Neither a scooter nor a bike and has worst characteristics of both.
Reminds me of old Honda Deauville. A horror of a bike in my eyes.

p.s. 5 minutes and Google later, I relalize that NC700 is a rebranded Deauville...

Um, nah, completely different engine, feels like a supermoto (the closest bike in
subjective feel I've ridden is a KTM Duke 690), better fuel consumption but yeah,
similar performance.

I'd take the DCT version in a heart beat, no shifting "problems" around town, got
a manual for when I want it, but I'd just like more power considering the bike is a
bit on the heavy side.

But that would result in a much higher fuel consumption without a doubt.

With the CVT upgrade on my 300cc scooter (malosi multivar, but with heavy rollers),
the NC700X needs less fuel per mile, which is amazing.

The NC700 better mileage than the DT???   If you go over to fuelly, most of the people are getting high fifties to mid sixties with a few rare seventies mixed in.  I have never had less than 73 on the Downtown.  High of 76.5 mpg, but I only have 900 miles on it and four fillups.  I almost always go full throttle to during acceleration.

Agreed. Like, three TIMES more power would do.

I could live with it as it is, but I'd like at least 75hp.

We'll see how the 2013 version looks like, waiting for a bigger displacement engine.
