USA Teen Car Insurance - Scooter Instead ?
« on: November 03, 2012, 10:52:20 AM »
Our teen age daughter will be old enough to drive soon.

We can not let her get her license because we can't afford the increase in car insurance premiums.

I asked our auto insurance company to confirm that if she got her motorcycle license only that our auto insurance would not increase. They said it wouldn't.

Next we'll get a quote to see how much the scooter insurance would increase if she got her motorcycle license.  We might be able to afford that.

Has anyone else already done this ?

Punishment if you have kids!?
Our insurances don't mind if we have kids with(out) driving license.
The kids just may not drive without license and beeing included in the insurance (with increased premium).

I don't know the state laws in PA but if she gets a 50cc scoot does she need a lic at all? Or is a 50 cc scoot too small an option?

I think a license is required in PA for 50cc - but it doesn't have to be a motorcycle license until the engine size exceeds 50cc's.

But she'll need a 150cc for our area.

I looked at your profile but can't see what country you're from.

Yep, here in the states the auto insurance goes way up as soon as a child gets their license.

When my daughters became old enough to drive, they were required to get a job to pay the difference in insurance and put gas in the car.  My parents required the same of me, plus I had to buy my own car.  Nothing wrong with teaching some responsibility IMO.  As far as the scooter goes, by the time you buy a decent scooter, the safety gear for it, and pay for service and upkeep, you will probably be spending at least as much as the increase in insurance, especially if you are looking at a 150cc.

Good luck....I was terrified when my daughters started driving.  I turned gray overnight..LOL.

Thats insane ??? What if the child just wants his/her license but wont drive your car, why should your insurance go up? It makes no sense ???
Chaos is my co-pilot.

Here in michigan its your choice to have insurance or not you can Drive a moped at the age of 15 if you past a test at the dnv. But you do need to wear a helmet and then after 18 its your choice to wear one or not. Between the age of 15 and 18 if you crash or a ticket it can stop you from geting a car license.

the cheepest car was a deawoo matiz 800cc priced £3689 thurd party fire and theft. the lowest insurance posable.

even a 50cc scoot is around £300 to insure for him
