They did something wrong, I've never heard of them, doesn't mean they weren't popular, just not global as some makers are. Always sad to see a company fold up, but when one closes another opens.

At one time in the 70s they were the largest producer of mopeds for the USA. Their USA headquarters was in Spartanburg South Carolina just down the road from the current Kymco headquarters of today.

Yes, in China.
Take a look what happens when factories close down using an example of Detroit.

For many people here, Tomos mopeds were the first contact with the motorcycle world, especially for those born between 1940 and 1980. They were exported everywhere around the world and many owners maybe did not know they were produced in Slovenia.

Croatian Postal Services still use Tomos mopeds for mail delivery and they are used in many countries of ex. Yugoslavia. This must have been largely a political decision.
Also end of an era. Tomos is around here pretty much a symbol as Harleys are in the USA.

Hi all, Now I understand why the Tomos dealer here in Oregon was selling off stock at VERY low prices.

For you English speaking guys, an explanation of the name. Maybe a bit too late.  :(

TOMOS is an abbreaviation of TOvarna MOtornih koleSov, "tovarna" meaning "factory" in Slovenian language, while "motornih kolesov" means "of motorcycles".
Effectively, "Motorcycle factory".

The factory itself was built in the (then!) border belt between Yugoslavia and Italy after World War II, to be sort of competition for Italian mopeds (Piaggio, Gilera, Aprilia etc.)

I think all the Tomos USA models were built in China. It's too bad they went under. Been around for years now. I friend of mine owns the Tomos ST moped. Pretty cool looking in Red. He is a smaller guy (5'4" maybe 120 lbs.) @ that ST buzzes him around fairly well. He has a hige black wire basket attached to the rack & I see him a lot making rounds to the market.

Tomos are great bikes, we had a lot around growing up. One of my first 50cc mopeds was one, they had a lot of performance parts also.

Now that you've all reminded me who the brand is I do remember them quite well from my youth, never drove/ridden one but they were popular around here.

too bad.

my first two "scoots" were Puch mopeds (austrian manufactured, i think). somewhere along the line i thought i heard that Tomos bought them back in the 80's.

outside of the pain in the ass of mixing the oil and gas, i had a ball with them - even with their flat-out top speed of 25mph. lightweight, easy to maneuver, incredible gas mileage, easy to start - what wasn't to like?

I remember my 1st Puch (yes...They were manufactured in Austria) It was Burgungy in color with a whopping 2.5HP! Damn thing would simply run & run forever. My friend had a Puch with the larger 2 seater & I was always jealous of that. Those were really good machines!
