Insurance Brackets - by engine size ?
« on: November 11, 2012, 01:08:29 PM »

Our scoots are pretty small - our insurance costs about $130 per year per scoot.

I thought I heard a comment about scoots being made less than 250cc, or 300cc, due to ownership/insurance costs.

Do you guys know what the insurance brackets are, how they work?
Zip code and drivers record aside, are the brackets only based on engine size or are there other criteria ?

I ask because we've been thinking about the new People 200/300.

The 200 is actually 205cc
The 300 is 298cc

That makes me think the insurance costs might jump way up at the 300cc engine size.

Not sure there, it is 500cc here in Sask. Canada. There is hardly any difference between my 125 and my 300.

Imho the manufacturers can only obey common criteria (i.e. 50cc common in EU and S-Asia too) or at most in important markets (i.e. >150cc for Italian Autostrada).

There are too much special rules in all the countries, i.e. German mc tax 1.84€ for every <=25cc, old (no more issued) German motorcylce licenses for <=80cc and for <=250cc, ...

German insurances have only three cc classes, roughly:
<=50cc: 50€/year fixed premium
>50cc & <= 125cc (& <=11kW): 20..80€/year (only depending on riders record and Zip)
>125cc (| >11kW): >=30€/year depending on engine power (and rider and Zip)

When I was checking insurance rates, they were placing all scooters, regardless of displacement in the same (low cost) category.  Motorcycles are divided up be displacement and there was a big jump at 500cc and 1000cc.  Yet another reason to buy a scooter.

  My experience has been that most bike are the same (except Ducati).
A 1000cc Concours and 650cc BMW were both around $250 per year.
The Ducati at 1000cc was $1000 per year. I assume that the Ducati's
are stolen more often. (It pays to ride an "Old Man's Bike).

You may consider asking your Insurance Agent.  My cost has been constant whether
50, 125 or 250cc for full coverage.   Somewhere around a $100 a year.  Yet  I covered
my newest 50cc with (just) decent liability for some $18 a year.  It appears that the major cost of
insurance in this area is for Non-insured / Underinsured Motorist coverage.   Medical covering a $1,000
is all that's available on my policy which is less than an Ambulance Ride these days.
