2012 Mongoose 70
« on: December 27, 2012, 03:51:02 PM »
I just bought my son a Mongoose 70. It is WAAAAY underpowered.. I was told by the dealership, there is NO BREAK IN PERIOD...Is this true??
I was told that for our elevation, (4000 FT) that I should drill holes in the air box, and remove the baffle on the exhaust for more power???
Has anyone else done any mods to increase power ?? rejet??? bigger carb???

Well it's probably restricted so the little ones don't go too crazy on it.

It should respond to the standard derestrictions (IE Wedding ring on Variator, headed blockage,
upjet) but at 4000' you should be running rich (as there is less air) so I wouldn't start hacking
the airbox right off.

Here's some info I found somewhere on derestricting the 50cc scooters, it might work on your ATV!

"

CVT DE-RESTRICTION INSTRUCTIONS FOR KYMCO 49CC SCOOTERS

All KYMCO scooters powered by 49cc engines are restricted in order to meet the
state and local laws for moped classification. These restrictions can be removed,
but may change the registration requirements on the scooter. Each dealer must
check their respective state and local laws to determine how the vehicle can be
registered and operated in their local market.

Follow these step-by-step instructions to de-restrict the automatic continuously
variable transmission (CVT) on these models.

1. REMOVE 8 OR 9 BOLTS (8MM) FROM CLUTCH COVER. ON SOME
MODELS IT MAY BE NECESSARY TO LOOSEN BODY PLASTICS TO GAIN
ACCESS TO BOLTS.

2. REMOVE 17MM NUT FROM FRONT PULLEY.

3. REMOVE OUTER HALF OF PULLEY (DRIVE PULLEY FACE).

4. REMOVE DRIVE BELT FROM SHAFT.

5.  WITH YOUR LEFT HAND, HOLD INNER HALF OF PULLEY (MOVABLE
DRIVE FACE), AND WITH YOUR RIGHT HAND REMOVE BOSS FACE DRIVE
(VARIATOR SPACER) CAUTION: HOLD INNER PULLEY HALF SECURELY TO
INSURE CLUTCH ROLLER WEIGHTS REMAIN IN PROPER POSISTION.

6. INSERT NEW SPACER.

7. INSTALL BELT.

8. INSTALL OUTER PULLEY HALF AND 17MM NUT.

9. INSTALL COVER.

Call KYMCO USA technical department at 1-800-845-7007 Ext. 231 for any
                 questions regarding de-restriction instructions. "

I would imagine you want to break it in like other motors by accelerating then decelerating a bit
during the first 100 miles or so...

I called, they told me that there is  most like ly a restrictor after the carb on the head side, and one before the exhaust pipe......Does anyone know what spacer i need to replace the "wedding band" with?

Some you just remove the spacer so the pulley's can get closer and some you need a different
boss. Pull the restrictor's in the carb and exhaust and try it! Then open the variator and have a
look. I almost bought a couple of 100 ATV's but decided to wait so no real experience with your
 model...

I removed the "wedding band".. that was a super simple task... It really is only a little wider than a common wedding band... It definately made a huge difference...I pulled the exhaust off, and there was no restrictor... So is it safe to assume the is no restrictor after the carb??

Not sure, they do different things on different models. I've heard of some that the restriction
was way inside the header and some had a washer thing that was easy to get out and others
had a weld that restricted flow...
