How many Miles (KM) do you have on your scoot?
« on: January 02, 2013, 09:08:15 AM »
Hi I'm new on the forum and looking to buy a Nikita (Downtown) 200. I'm living in Taiwan now and Kimco calls them Nikita's here. I found a used 2011 Nikita for about 1,600 US dollars less than new one. It looks like new and has 20,000 km (12,500 miles)on it.

Should I save the 1,600 bucks and buy used or go for a new one?

How many miles does your scoot have and have they been trouble free? What should I look for if I do decide to look at the used scooter more closely. I doubt they would do a cylinder leak down test.

BTW The 300 I can not buy due to licensing issues. The government here will not license a 250cc or larger motorcycle unless you have had a Taiwan license for over 1 year.

I'm around 16.000km on my 300, no issues.

I've had over 20.000km on my Agility 125 which is the cheapest scoot they
make (in China), it also had no issues.

2011 Downtown, bought new in 2012, a hair less than 1000 issue free miles on it.  FYI..... 74 mpg average, heavy throttle.

..welcome to the forum astrocreep!!

..i ride 50cc scoots, and my 08 agility ran 55,000kms before it trashed a bearing....

..currently riding a 04 super9 that is about to trip 20,000...

..a 2011 with 20,000 has been a daily rider, almost surely...

..if you can afford the extra cash, get you a new one and enjoy!!!

The short answer to your question is to buy new if you can afford it.  You'll get piece of mind that goes along with a warranty and theft insurance (only offered on new scoots to the original purchaser for the first 2 years if I recall correctly).  Buying 2nd hand means no theft insurance.

Although that's fairly high mileage for a used scoot that new there in Taiwan, reliability should be no problem as long as it remained stock.  If it looks tricked-out, or modded, don't even make an offer - keep looking.

The long answer is that the 2nd-hand asking prices tend to be inflated quite a bit in Taiwan, and if you have good bargaining skills you should be able to get the price down on a used scoot by a good amount.  Keep in mind you can also negotiate with dealers for a more decent out-the-door price and/or accessories/services than what Kymco lists.

Also, depending on how long you intend to live there, this is what I'd do if I knew I'd be there more than a year:

First buy fairly recent 125cc or 150cc scoot.  It more than enough to get you around town. Heck, I just did an "around the island" trip on my SYM Fighter 150 while there last month.  Or buy a 250cc DINK (249cc, so still legal for you to buy) or such if you really want more power - being an older design, they'll be much cheaper than the Nikita's.

After 1 year, go take the safety class, get your "Heavy motorcycle" license, and then grab the 300cc Nikita.  That way you'll be able to enjoy the benefits of access to the expressways if necessary.

Incidently, which city are you at in Taiwan?

+1 for the last post.

Spend the absolute minimum on the scoot you get now, and buy the one (or a motorcycle)
you really want next year.

Buying a new 200i if you already want the 300i NOW is a bad idea.

I have an old Dink 150 now. Which I think has enough power for a scooter but the ergos suck. I think the power from the 200 will be enough. I don't go for long rides around the island. At most I would ride it to Taichung and there are no expressways from here to there. I would rarely see any speeds higher than 80 kph.

What I like about the Nikita are the ergos and the fact that it can hold my full sized helmet under the seat. Plus it looks cool and is a better fit for me than my little Dink.

The used scooter does appear to be completely stock and in excellent condition. That being said I would still prefer a new one. I also want to see the 250 EVO from SYM and the Xciting 250 and Aeon's 250 before I make up my mind on what to buy. It seems like an issue to find the right dealer to go to since most here never have large scooters in stock. By pure luck of riding by this dealer I saw the used Nikita in the street and he had 3 more in his showroom. All were white.

I live in a little town called Dajia close to my work.

The Xciting is a lot of work around town, very heavy compared to the DT and slower steering.
It's a great scooter, but it's meant for open roads and touring.

welcome...to the forum......doublesc...has it right...from first sentence to last.....i have a 2012,,dt.....no issues (except caught a nail in front tire which i plugged)....about 7000km..on it with three synthetic oil changes.....handles incredibly well in city and great touring ride as well

from past experience...i strongly rx......going for the 300....if you reside over the 1 yr requirement.....and of course if you can afford same...you will appreciate the extra power.....as  you probably imagine......i know of few enthusiasts...who buy down to lesser power/cc..... you should have no problem mastering the 200 and once you have....you will regret...not going for the 300 straight out of the gate......both bikes are quality....and should have a long shelf life if you do the basic maintenance....good luck

I have a 2011 300i dt. 28,000 km.  runs very good but it was reving to high over 60 miles per hour, changed the belt  & variator now it revs about 6,000 rpm at 60 mph.  I have a top box & side boxes by Givi with admore lights so I am well lite up for night riding,. I just rebuilt my seat for comfort , added 2 inches on top so I can slide back 3 or 4 inches,  Im waiting for spring for a long ride to find out how comfortable it is ,.

Stock setup should be 60mph @ 6000 rpm, that's what I had on mine anyways.
With 14gr Dr Pulley sliders you get about the same at 60mph, but less at speeds above 70mph.

As of this morning before I drove to Ponder TX and back on the rain, I had 9032 miles.  I purchased my 2012 Downtown 300 in May 2012.
