Wife suggested I get a new scoot.....
« on: February 22, 2013, 05:04:13 PM »
That's right! She suggested it and I am considering the DT 300i based on what YOU guys have said. I am a little disenchanted by what I see in the "rack" as it seems to not perform any function. Any aftermarket stuff available so I could strap down stuff?

Not a bad idea, Cortez, I had forgotten those elastic nets with hooks exist even at Harbor Freight. I have a dog carrier that simply MUST fasten to the rack of what ever and I am temporarily at a loss of how to do it on the Downtown. Other than that the cargo net should work on non-dog stuff!

Nearly forgot: NOBODY seems to have one of these DT 300i's anywhere......

Karl, I told my wife that I was thinking about a new scoot.  It will still be while until I recover from THAT LOOK.

Richard L.

Really, it is 2 yrs old and only has a little over 3000 miles on it.

This is the only Kymco Downtown specific rack for topcase mounting that I am aware of.  It is for monolock and monokey topcases but I am not sure if you could make other use out of it.

SHAD makes a topcase rack too.

Doesn't look as good because of the 2 support bars, but you can sit on it and it won't budge.

jwalz and Cortez, you may have something there in how they did the platform for the topbox. Thanks!

That one looks more solid.  I might like the Shad one better, but I think the obstruction in front of the brake light would make me get a light kit for the top box for sure with that one.

The rear light is huge and the bars don't get in the way at all.
Been there, done that.

Stand back at about 20ft from the bike and the rear light will blind you, the bars aren't noticeable.

I did add the extra light though just because it was available.. and it's twice as powerfull as the stock
rear bulb = go for it.

This is mine:

Wow, Cortez! That's hot!

Does $5665.00 sound like a good price for a DT 300i?

I'll let someone from USA respond to that, DT with ABS costs almost $8k here.

Fair enough, Cortez. I do not want ABS anyway. I am not impressed with it on cars and would for the time being rather rely on my skills both in cars and on scoots.

Good luck with that. I'm on my 2nd bike with ABS, wouldn't ride one without it.

Karl

Crossbolt,

My dealer had a leftover model from the previous year and knocked $1,000 off sticker, but then added back $200 for a prep fee.  So the cost for the scoot and prep was $4600 plus tax and title.

I have seen people report similar prices on new scoots that were not year old leftovers but it all depends on the dealer.  I would look for AT LEAST $500 off the MSRP and low prep fees, but you can probably do even better than that depending on your willingness to haggle.

I just was a first time scooter buyer, made them think I might buy one on a lark and said "What is the best you can do on this one?"  and $4600 was what they came back with.  That was the extent of my haggling skills.

I don't think ABS is available in the US anyway but when working correctly, on wet, dusty or uneven pavement you can put all the force you want into the brake levers and the bike will maximize the stopping power without fear of locking up and going down.  When humans do it, we can keep it upright but extract less stopping power out of it because we can get as close to the maximum threshold as well as the computers and sensors.

I love ABS, even in cars, but the pulsating freaks some people out.  Saved my butt a couple times in my car and I was amazed how controlable the car was when it should have spun into a wall.  Serious pucker moment.
