Faint Pinging Sound

Have recently noticed a light pinging sound starting at 40 mph or so. Its hard to hear over the normal engine noise but it seems to be getting more distinct. Its time for another valve check/adjustment. Could this sound be caused by by the valves? The Like has about 9000 miles on it now. Oil level is good and the spark plug is new.

Several factors contribute to pinging.. one is too low octane rating... start with filling with a higher octane...

Had been using regular gas lately so filled up with premium. The sound continued but may not is ridden far enough to make sure the premium was being burned. After the valve adjustment the sound is gone and the bike is running well.

Yeah, check valve clearances.

Did you adjust the valves yourself? If so, whats the gap measurement? I have started to work on my Like as the dealer cost is crazy high. It would only take about 3 to 4 years at my current riding pace before the service cost equals the cost of the scooter.

From this forum the exhaust and intake valve clearance is 0.004"

I have looked on YouTube and the forum for how to instructions. I would like to attempt it myself. I saw a scooter valve adjustment video where the cover was accessed by removing the seat and plastic piece.

Regarding fuel, the manual says 91 octane.

Randy, where did you get the manual? How much was the cost? Are the instructions good enough for someone who does their own oil changes and brakes on a car? Thanks!

tclhb, the owner's manual says 91 octane but some of the stickers on the Met-in tub say 87 R+M/2. 87 octane works in these bikes. Use non-ethanol fuel if you can get it.

Karl, 87 octane on pump stickers may not be the same as 87 R+M/2....   87 Octane may mean Octane (RON) Research Octane Number....   while 87 R+M/2 is Research Octane Number plus Motor Octane Number divided by 2.      87 R+M/2 may be a higher octane fuel than the 87 Octane (RON) or vice versa...  Moreover, 87 AKI  is the same as 87 R+M/2....
