Like 200i headlight
« on: April 04, 2013, 09:49:42 PM »
I'm new to riding, but I have read up quit a bit and have been practising riding in my neighborhood.  I have ridden in a lot of different conditions, one of which was at night.  After using some electrical tape on the top of the headlight to reduce the glare on the windshield, I could see better but found the stock headlight was still lacking.  So, I want to upgrade it.  I have read that most scoots use an H4 bulb, but I have not found anything stating if the Like uses this bulb or not.

I have been looking at upgrading to an HID setup, but I really need to know if an H4 will fit before I drop money on a setup.  I'm not concerned about rewiring as I am VERY familiar with doing that.  If y'all want, I can even do a write up on wiring up a set of relays to prevent problems with the stock wiring.  Thanks for any info y'all can provide on this.

I don't know what bulb the Like uses, but part of your modification for HID will need to include the aiming. The OEM bulb was designed to meet certain requirements the least of which is aiming. Just sayin.

Please keep us posted with your mod as I too would like to change over to a brighter headlamp on my Like.

I agree.  I noticed on mine, the low beam is too low, as is the high beam.  I tried lowering the preload on the shocks which would slightly raise the light aiming, but the lowest setting was too soft so that didn't help.  When I have it all apart, I'll see how to adjust the headlight.  Thanks for reminding me!

Welcome aboard!

Three prongs, most probably an H4.... H4 houses both the low and high beams... while other bulbs are single contact with only a single beam... you need 2 bulbs in one housing...

Well use a Bi-xenon kit, that uses a shutter to do high/low beam.
Someone here had trouble though with too much current draw.
It pulls 8 - 9 amps on startup and should be 35 watts or 3 amps
continious but he got 4.5 amps and it killed his battery....

I am replacing some of the other lights with LEDs which will decrease the total amp load on the electrical system.  Hopefully it will be enough to prevent what you describe happening, again.

I might just go with a single beam kit instead of the standard high/low Bi-xenon kit.  Wire it up so when I hit the high beams, the headlight turns off thus decreasing power consumption during the day.  I'm replacing the standard driving lights in the front fairing with 5 watt 194 LED bulbs so I would still have good visibility during the day.

I'll definately do an amperage draw test when I get it all hooked up to make sure it's not drawing too much power.  Maybe find a kit that actually does draw 3 amps when it's running would help too.  Thanks for the info!!!

I like this kit, I got one a long time ago and it's been fine. I never measured the current
draw as I had it on a motorcycle. One kit can do 2 bikes if you wire up another relay.

I used the 4300K kit to look close to stock. It does a good job!

Well, I just pulled the trigger and purchased an H4 HID single beam kit.  I will wire it up so that the headlight will only be on when I switch the headlight switch from high to low, or vice versa.  I also ordered an H4 harness to help in the wiring.  I will be wiring up a relay with this setup, and I'll be testing the current draw once it is installed.

For driving lights, I am replacing the stock 194 bulbs in the driving light position to 7 watt LED bulbs that should be much brighter than the stock bulbs and still maintain visibility with no headlight running during the day.

I've got a few other things planned for my Like that I'll be posting up on here in the weeks to come.  I've got an air horn waiting to be installed along with some other goodies!

Word to the wise.  When you order an HID kit, make sure it includes the ballasts!

I now have the bulbs, wiring, ballasts, relay, and fuse holder/fuse all ready to be installed.  I also have some 7 watt LED 194 bulbs to replace the stock driving lights.  Over the next day or two I'll be installing this kit and notating current draw and will take plenty of pics too.

At the same time, I am replacing the stock horn with a small air horn setup.  I will be using a relay with the air horn as well, and like the headlight, I will be taking pics of it to post up here.

Alright y'all. the headlight upgrade is done!  I tested amp draw before installing the HID light and it came out to be 3.47 amps once it is warmed up.  Start up amperage peaked at 8 amps.  Because of the low amp draw which is close to the stock headlight, I did not use a relay so this install was 100% plug and play.  The hardest part of the install was disassembling the dash.  I searched all here and looked in the service manual to no avail.  Come to find out, you need to lift up on one panel while pushing down on the other panel, then pull apart at the same time and the 2 dash panels then seperate.

So, once you have everything taken apart, this is what you see behind the front panel.

If you notice, there is a perfect spot for the ballast on the right hand side.  Here is a closer look;

Here is what the headlight looks like when it is turned off;

Now, I was going to mount some 7 watt 194 LED bulbs in the factory driving light positions, but they were too long and would not fit.  So, I put these in instead;

Here is what those bulbs look like when turned on;

Here is what the stock headlight looks like at night;

Low beam;

High beam;

This is what the stock lights look like from an oncoming cars point of view;

Later tonight I'll take my Like out and get a night time shot of the new headlight and I'll post it up in this thread.

Alright, here are the night time pics.  I need to adjust the headlight up some.  I love the visibility this new headlight provides, where the light is shining.  But in order to really be able to ride at night, I need to raise the adjustment up to make it more useable.

It really doesn't show in this picture, but you can really see details in the road much better.

This is DEFINATELY more visible now to other motorists than what it was before.

Even the low wattage driving light bulbs by themselves put off a decent amount of light when the headlight is turned off.  This will be great driving through my neighborhood when I don't need bright light to see.

I looked today at the stock turn signal bulb locations in the front panel and am thinking about adding more LED bulbs there to use as additional driving lights.

I use flat leds instead of multi SMD leds... they are whiter and brighter....

The only reason why I used them is because I had them laying around.  I know I'm going to upgrade them to brighter ones, I just wanted to see how these were first.  I will definately be changing out to the flat LEDs in the future though.
