Looking for a People 2t!! Please help!
« on: April 08, 2013, 02:52:24 AM »
Hello everyone.  I hope I'm coming to the right place and there's someone up here that can help me.

I've been trying to buy a new scooter and after much research and deliberation, I've decided that I want a Kymco People 50 2t.  I want the ivory and black color option.

I only have two authorized dealers in my area.  Neither of them have this model in stock and I've gotten nowhere when asking if they could get in this model.  They fail to call me back.

Can anyone point me in the direction of where to find this model?  I'm not opposed to buying a slightly used model, but I prefer new if I can get it.

I've searched ebay as well, and the only ones I fine are too far away and most don't offer shipping and I haven't seen the color I want on ebay either.

I found a company in Chicago called Flat Squirrel Scooters that has the model I want at a great price and sells online as well as Brick and Morter, but no one has responded to any of my emails and their mailbox is full when I try to call the store directly.  Needless to say, I'm a little hesitant about paying for a scooter from them online not knowing if or when I'd get my scooter.

If anyone on here has any info as to where I might find this scooter please help me out.

Thanks so much for reading!

Start getting a list of Kymco dealers within 300 miles of you and cold call them or look at their online inventory. If you don't find one extend the search to 500 miles etc. Once you find your bike, find a company that will ship it if the dealer won't (I can't imagine a dealer not doing that for you), make arrangements so that you'll be home when the unit arrives. Test the unit right away in case of problems etc.

This is the busiest time of year to purchase a Kymco.  Go in person to the closet s
Dealer.  You may have to order it and wait a couple of weeks.  The dealers are busy this time of year and will be very slow to respond to emails and phone calls.

I agree with Blitzjb. Just go to the local dealer in person & tell them you want to order a new one. This is a crazy time for most dealers & they will take you seriously if you walk-in & tell them what you want. My bet is you'll have a Super 8 50cc on order within a day. As Blitzjb mentioned...Delivery should be about two weeks.

Well, I've called all the local dealers within 100 miles of me.  10 dealers in all.  The only Kymco People 'Ive been able to find is a used 125 in silver.  I didn't want used, and I don't want silver.

When I asked about ordering one, everyone is saying Kymco isnt making the People this year, which really bummed me out.  I really, really wanted this scooter.

I talked to a dealer in Wisconsin that had a Silver 50 2t, but it too was silver and they wanted to charge me an arm and a leg to ship it.  They wouldn't let me arrange my own shipping. (had a quote for $250 to ship to me in NC)

So, now I'm back to square one.  Scouring ebay and craigslist for my scooter.  There has to be one out there somewhere, right?

Keep your eyes peeled for me please!

Newscooter: I'm sorry. I didn't know (or I didn't read your thread fully) you wanted a Kymco People 50 2T. You maybe out of luck or you'll have to get another color. Kymco hasn't imported the People 2T for almost 2 years now. The People 50cc 2T is a great scooter...but why only the 50cc's? I would set your slights on a 150cc 4-Stroke myself. In the end...you can leave a 150cc in stock form & it will be light years ahead of a 50cc 2T IMHO in terms of overall speed.

In North Carolina , where Newscooter lives , you don't have to license , insure , inspect or pay personal property tax on scooters of 50cc and under . The potential savings could explain the desire for a people 50 , and the 2t has much stronger performance than the 4t . Good luck .

Juice: He lives in an area that spring comes very early (I live north of Boston, MA.) Are you kidding me? I pay $219.00 a year in insurance for my Kymco GTI300, then I pay $25.00 for registration & an additional $15.00 for inspection. Short money if you ask me! Yes....2T was more power then a 4T, but @ what cost? You want to be on the very side of the road buzzing around tops @ 43MPH? Not me. It's not safe if you ask me. If you live in a city...then maybe. 50cc scooters are for kids if you ask me.

Hey guys.  Thanks for the suggestions.

I cold called everyone within 100 miles of me, but as someone mentioned above, the Kymco People 50 is no longer available.  So had to try to find a leftover 2011 model.

I spent a week cold-calling dealers inland, and went in person to all dealers up and down the crystal coast with no luck.  I found a couple of slightly used models, but they were all silver or wine color.  I wanted the black and ivory and brand new if possible.

As you could expect, these trips were killing me, because it's been in the 70's-80's for a couple weeks now, azaleas and dogwoods are blooming everywhere.  And I couldn't find my scooter!!!

So I called Kymco USA direct on a hunch, and just asked the receptionist if I could have a list of everyone that bought  my particular scooter in the past 2 years!  She remembered off the top of her head a dealer in San Antonio, Texas that bought a large number of those scooters at a discount once Kymco discontinued them and was trying to make room for new inventory.

She gave me his contact information, and voila!  He had 2 left and yours truly bought one.

It's now on a truck from San Antonio, expected to arrive this Friday.  Perfect timing for me to scoot around town and run some errands.

Thanks again for your comments and suggestions.  On to  the next question...Derestricing.

I asked the dealer if he did any kind of derestricting and if so how much would he charge.  He said he derestricts during initial servicing at no charge.  He derestricts the variator boss.

So my question to you Kymco experts....What other derestricts are there.  I've heard exhaust but I don't think that's something I want to tackle right now.

I've also heard CDI, but I'm not sure what wire I'm supposed to disconnect.  I've read and tried to figure it out, but the answers seem to be all over the place with regards to which color wire to disconnect.

Anyone know for this model?

Any other suggestions?

Thanks,

donut

Newscooter: I LIKE it! You're a hardcore "bulldog" if you ask me! You want..what you want & now you're getting it! Good for you! But....I must admit, you'll want a 150cc scooter after your purchase bother! I went from a TGB Key West 2T 50cc (great scooter, fast as hell) to a Kymco People S200, then to a Kymco GTI300. Trust me...The People S50 will be ok for a while then, you'll want an upgrade! You can "tweak" a 50cc all-day long...but it will never measure-up to a 150cc my friend.! People.....Please chime-in here!

MassScoot I think you are right about him wanting to upsize but now is not the time to knock him. he just bought one so it's a done deal. Better to let him enjoy it for now and who knows for sure it may be all he needs. Maybe his use for it is only within city limits and he won't need speeds over 40.

On the same note I was thinking of going slightly larger in CC's myself, I am a little disappointed with my MPG and realized it was mainly because was doing a bunch of city riding and max RPM riding when I got onto secondary roads, so my MPG was in the high 50's low 60's range. My problem with going bigger is that I don't have a bunch of room in my garage so maybe a 250cc would be all I could do if I switched. For now I'll keep  my max speed at 45- 50 MPH and save on some fuel not to mention beating up the engine.
