12 volt accessory plug

      My 2012 came with a 12 volt accessory plug under the seat. Can I use this plug for a GPS, and  a battery tender. I installed my a plug on my old scooter and put a fuse in the positive line as a safeguard. Is the factory plug fused and safe to use for these accessories?

   hi ,  the only thing it is fused for is GPS or cell phone,.  I ran # 10 wire to the battery  fused the hot line, now it is good for the tender , the elec. tire pump, and boost if required,.  or heated mitts ,. clothing etc..  and it is not on the key,.

I just installed a 12v plug on the handle bars, centerline, just below the speedometer.  Can barely notice it.  I used 12 gauge wire, so it will handle a lot of amps.  I need to figure out how many amps are surplus to the system, so that I don't run down the battery, if I'm using heated gloves, etc.

I don't think anybody mentioned this,  but I believe the 12VDC connector under the seat is only ON when the key is.  I just added another outlet in the gas tank access panel on the hump on my xciting.  I also moved my Kickstand Down Manual cut-off switch from the dash to that location also.   Of course,  you'll likely have to take off the front cowling.  You can feed the wire from the battery up along and under the side panel.  You may be able to feed a coat hanger down from the front and then pull the wire up into the cowl area. 

I recommend thinking about future things you may want to add (i.e. WOLO/Nautilus Air Horn,  Leds, any switches, etc.)  as you contemplate doing this.  The reason is the front cowl is attached using screws.  The more you remove and install these screws,  the plastic studs wear and the screws won't hold.  I've probably had my cowl off 10 or 12 times.  I glued Nylon spacers around the molded-in studs on the cowl and tapped the screw holes to 8-32.

    I'm going to rewire my factory accessory plug for a GPS also. What guage wire and what size in-line fuse do you recommend?

   I use # 10 wire, red and green wire, and find out what fuse to use, by what you plug in to it, and if you plug a bigger draw heater just put a bigger fuse,.  I think you would be good for 20 amp. but if it is for a small draw , gps or phone  1 amp.is good,. it is to protect what you plug in ,.

  All done! I installed another plug under the seat. I used 10 guage wire and a 10amp fuse. That should handle a GPS no sweat.

 Went out tonight with my GPS. Works fine. FYI speedometer seems to be about 2mph fast at least up to 65.

      I haven't mastered the art of downloading pictures yet. I mounted my second plug under the seat across from the factory one. I just run the GPS wire under the front of the seat.
