2014 Piaggio Fly: Looks really Good!
« on: April 19, 2013, 01:10:06 PM »
I was poking around the Modern Buddy forums & someone posted about the 2014 Piaggio Fly. I admit I'm pretty impressed overall. 3 valve engine, FI, front & rear disc brakes, 100+MPG to boot! The real kicker is that they are keep it's retail price from last year @ $2899.00 That's a Kymco "Movie 150" killer if you ask me. Now...the problem? Piaggio/Vespa insane fees to get OTD.

Here's a couple of links:

Modern Vespa has a similar thread. OTD $ will depend on the dealer. Here where I leave it will be around $3,600 OTD. Not a bad price. My Like was $3,400. That included tax, lic, reg and fees, and dealer prep.

I just migrated from a Piaggio Fly 150  to a Frost (Yager). I was happy with the functionality of the Fly for my purposes, and had no intention of changing. Then, I saw the new version announcement, and thought the improvements made it worth considering an upgrade. In addition to the engine enhancements, I was particularly interested in the increased under-seat storage (they've moved the gas tank and the battery) and my understanding that they've increased the battery capacity; trust me, the previous little 9AH battery (no room for anything bigger) was a constant source of headaches and anxiety.

I felt that, if I was considering a new Fly, I owed it to myself to look at what else was available. To make a long story short, I found that I could get a new 2012 Frost for a lower OTD price than a 2013 Fly, and in the process, hopefully get away from all the little idiosyncrasies that seem to accompany Piaggio scooters. So far, in my estimation, the Frost has proven to be much more bike than the improved Fly will ever be.

It seems the US niche market with scooters has hurt us. Other countries have so many more scooters to choose from. I just hope America someday (soon) find scooters to be more than a novelty.

It would be nice if this could happen, but at the moment the U.S. might be at least twenty years out from this happening. Even those who ride their motorcycles look down upon us as if we should get a real bike instead of riding a novelty item as you said.

I think it's more of a "culture" thing than any other else... They just don't want to see the Terminator riding a Kymco saying "I'll be back!!!" .... or Nicolas Cage riding a flaming Agility....
