I haven't heard of any of the mainland Chinese bikes being considered "as good," quality-wise as any of the Taiwanese bikes. Supposedly some are getting there, but one that I hear mentioned a lot has a good local dealer (open about 14 mos., so far), and he admits he's replaced entire engines under warranty... something the SYM/Kymco/Genuine dealer has not had to do on any of his bikes, in three years.
.
I think that we do not know exactly what all Kymco repair shops are doing at a given moment, do we?
Btw. Honda is considered to be a top-quality producer of bikes, yet, a friend of mine had engine replaced on his brand new CBR1000RR after several hundred kilometers and within a week of rolling out from the shop. It is just a matter of statistics when one of the bikes will roll out from production line as faulty.
You can hear such stories in car world too, I have some horror stories that involve quite expensive cars like Mercedes from AMG gamma or BMW M3/M5, all within warranty.
But, to get back to the topic, watch the Chinese competition. I named one model - Keeway Outlook 125/150. Take a look at the price and quality tag. They are getting better and better.

Two weeks ago I bought liquid cooled Chinese quad Bashan BS200. For 2800 US$ on the road I got 200 cc, 15 hp engine with gas preloaded shocks, 4 gears and reverse. I think Kymco`s pricing for quads is quite shameful and exaggerated - 50 cc automatic quad costs here 4000+ US$, while 200-250 cc with CVT would cost around 7000 US$. I think we can agree that money does not fall off the tree, especially not today.
Anyhow, time will tell. Both Piaggio and Kymco are now effectively ***CHINESE*** scooters, being produced in China and not Taiwan or Italz. I think that the day is not so far when "Chinese" will not be a synonym for low quality. Two days ago I bought Gekko full-sized integral helmet for 35 US$ with tax included. You will say - it is low quality and it will break, it will not protect you in the crash. To the contrary, it has all CE certificates, it is made of policarbonate and my gf has been using the same for a year, not a single sign of wear on it. The brand is Gekko - 10 years ago I paid around 200 US$ for much worse helmet from Nolan than this one.
Times are changing and I am not sure that big names like Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki, Suzuki or Kymco are exactly on the right path. Where I live, their sales have dropped significantly while low-quality-el-cheapo-noname Chinese scooter sales have skyrocketed. Yet, few years ago everybody was making fun of people who purchased Baotians 50 cc 4T that could tag along at max speed of 25 mph on flat surface...
