To Derestrict or not to derestrict

From what I understand changing the CID unit can give a big improvement on speed but my local garage says it makes the engine more problematic revving higher, what are your experiences?

Well Kymco used to give the dealers instructions on how to derestrict. The bike was designed to
rev higher just was restricted for the states that said 30 MPH for 50cc. If you get an aftermarket
CDI with no redline you might be able to hurt the motor by overreving...

Oh so if I get an unrestricted cdi to keep up with traffic (35mph at the most) it should be fine, at the minute seem to be doing 28 mph with frustrated cars behind me.

MotorRandy is right on!   here's another explanation...


If your engine was designed to rev for 10,000 rpm and the factory restricted it to run for only 8,000 rpm.... you can derestrict it to get the optimum 10,000 rpm, and still not ruin your engine.

However, if your engine was designed for 10,000 rpm and you installed a CDI with no limiter which can over-rev your engine to 12,000 or 14,000 rpm, then, you will ruin your engine...

Follow my guide, it will take you a day, and your scoot WILL reach 50mph+ without spending more than £15 or ($25) I would buy a max of three sets of rollers 4.5g 5.5g and 7g to experiment with
