"Tell Tale" hole leaking coolant - Vancouver Mechanic?
« on: June 14, 2013, 08:21:44 PM »
Hi everyone.

My 50cc Super 9 recently started leaking coolant. Upon reading the manual I discovered that the "Tell Tale Hole" leaks coolant when the mechanical seal separating the coolant from the oil is damaged. So I've open up my scooter and I have the cover with the seal off, but to remove and replace the seal I need a special tool. I called the only scooter mechanic in the area (I live in Vancouver) and he said it's going to take 2-3 hours to replace, and he doesn't sell the tool I need, and he charges 90 dollars an hour. Is he full of BS? Am I stuck with him, or does anybody else living in the Vancouver Area know where to find someone else? I just need the seal replaced, I can do the rest myself.

No special tool needed just a seal driver;

Oh haha. That's what I was talking about. Where can I get one? When I was talking to the mechanic on the phone he said that he doesn't sell it. Are they easy to find? Can I get them at any old parts store (Lord co. ect)

Well you could use a socket or buy the driver at a tool store like harbor freight...

I used a socket to remove it. It took a hell of a lot of banging but the seal and the outer bearing came out.  Unfortunately, apparently the inner bearing rotted, so it all fell apart, except the outer race, which is still press fitted inside the case. Any suggestions on how I could remove that without damaging the rest of the case? I've tried heating it but there is no way of getting any real force or leverage to force it out. I'm going to start a new thread on this question. Thanks for your help.

  I was reading somewere that they put the part in the freezer,. for installation of seals is that why it is so tight,. just a idea?

I ended up getting a dremmel and grinding a couple indents into the race on either side and whacking it with a Hammer and a driver of sorts and that got it out. Thanks for the help. The ol' girl is scootin' around the town like she's supposed to again!
