'06 Kymco Super 9 too many mods n adjustments
« on: June 27, 2013, 05:52:51 AM »
I have an '06 Super 9 with technigas exhaust, 100 main jet carb kit, 1500 torque spring, 1500 clutch springs, a belt that appears to be not quite the right size but i have researched and found it to be very close, a mix of 5g slider weights and 7g rollers, hp coil and plug wire, an NGK BR8HX iridium plug, open air intake filter.       I have made these mods, including cleaning out the stoppage in the muffler, and am still having issues. I live in the mountains of NC, and am trying to gear the bike for hill climbing and have a little fun on the straights and downhill. The bike starts out great from a cold start, but when I come to a stop, it doesnt want to drop gears back down and acts like the clutch is seized against the outer. I am relatively new to the scooter world and modifying, and am puzzled at the moment.

Please Help if anyone can!!!

Or tell me what is done wrong... either will be appreciated as both are a welcomed learning experience.

If the belt is too short it will cause problems like youre describing.

It had started this last night but I didn't put this belt on until today. The last mod was th 1500 torque spring. Could it be something else?

Sounds like a failing clutch/return spring...

If the triple springs(clutch springs) were failing they would drag and eventually kill the engine from not going into "neutral" when coming to a stop. Also alot of smoke would start to come out the bottom of your kicker cover at the drain vent.

If the contra spring (torque, center, driven spring) was failing (which is new also) it could cause the same scenario but Ive used chinese driven pulleys and springs on my stroker build and race 72s and never had this issue with not "downshifting", so I dont think its the contra but it could.

I would remove the one variable that you know for sure is not correct, the belt. If the belt is too short it will try to always force it into the "next gear" and when coming to a stop it will not fully bottom out on the front. Turn off the engine and it allows the belt to slide down as theres no outward force being applied to the varaitor sheath.

The 7 gram rollers are leaving the 5gram sliders with nothing to do, giving erratic performance. Try all 6 gram rollers, the sliders are getting hung up.

Its seems to be quite amazing. I replaced the mix rollers of 5g sliders and 7g rollers with all 5g sliders, and it ran almost perfectly today. Huge hill down road from my house that used to be a beast climbing at 25, today stroked up at 40 (according to speedometer). Kind of funny really, but im glad whatever it is. Although the bike is very close to being right-on, seems as tho there is something not quite right with the fuel/air mix. I have a cold air intake and custom fabricated a pipe that angles the filter toward the air, in an effort to ram-jet the carb. Im not sure if this is a power move or a bad idea? Comments again are welcome either way.

By the way, thank all that has taken the time to help a fellow Super 9'er in the efforts. I absolutely love this thing and want it rolling right.

LOL, as you commented I was writing about changing them all back to the same weights. Thanks

This has already been discussed at full length, the total mass is what the end result is. Do some research before you say mixing weights leaves the lighter ones with nothing to do. Its very very very simply physics. Your problem is that youre a heavy person probably and you need a lighter total to get it higher in the rpms and stay in the power band.
Honestly you cant defy the laws of physics even if youre on a 49cc scooter.

Actually, love my kymco, I weigh about 170 and 5'11". If u consider that to be heavier. And im not the person that doesn't understand physics. I. Am in college for Engineering. But I wasn't sure about mixing the sliders with the rollers.

To me thats on the lighter side of most scooter riders I know. I weigh 220 and I think thats pretty heavy for a scoot.
The physics stab wasnt directed at you, its directed at the person spreading misinformation. If you dont know the answer fine, but dont just say things because you want to be seen.

Right on and that truth I second. I also have a question about the intake vs. exhaust. Im not sure if its natural for the intake to be so loud. Its like the intake serves as the exhaust as well it is so loud. So I took the muffler off and dis-assembled it and the packing was completely stopped up. It had a cake off carbon that matted the fibers together. I shaved off what I could without feeling like it would harm it. Is that normal to be so loud or is there anything else I cam do.

The intake can make just as much noise as the exhaust. The manufacturers go to great lengths
to quiet it down. Yours might have been modified in the quest for more power. Check the factory
setup against your bike and see what is different;

It doesn't take a degree in biological engineering to pile up horsehit, which is what your diagnosis was. Perhaps it will serve you to figure out how to keep from being a dick.

Maybe it's because you're fat, and your experiments with auto erotic asphyxiation have proven unsatisfactory.

Meanwhile, the dude applied my observation to not mix sliders and rollers and effected a cure.

You're welcome.

Youre a highly intelligent fella I can tell, after you finish your high school homework will mommy let you drive her mini van?
Just one word of advice, I have near 12k in performance scooters, I believe I know a thing or two about CVTs.

One quick call to your local structural engineering union and they will go to great lengths and in great detail why physics is absolute and no new theories on centrifugal force have come about in the past 20 years.
Just figure Id throw that out there for any non believer in physics.
And one more thing, I accomplished 13,480 rpms by mixing roller weights.
