What are you wearing on your scoot?
« on: July 02, 2013, 09:39:34 PM »
It is not a fun topic....
We all know that 'they' don't see us .....
Every safey talk or riding manual book speaks of the same thing. Car drivers do not see people on 2 wheels.

I am certainly no scooter riding expert - but I know what I've seen while wearing my hideously 'loud' Hi-Viz Frogg Tog jacket.

People are seeing me - some are still trying to kill me - but they are seeing me in this goofy jacket.
A rain jacket on a 90 degree day ? Yep, hotternhell. I still wear it, and my full face helmet and my gloves and long pants. (Unzip some of this stuff - and if you don't get arrested - you'll at least let some breeze in those places)

To combat the heat and add more protection, I've purchased a Hi Viz armored mesh jacket. Although, at my age, if I come off this scoot in any significant way - it ain't gonna be pretty.....armor or no armor.

Wish I could have found a Hi Viz helmet in my size (XXXX - yeah, you read that right)

Folks, you have to do all you can do to protect yourself.
Give some serious thought to putting on some Hi Viz clothing EVERY time you go scootering.
Unless you ride in front of the big bank windows, we can't see what we look like anyway --   and, at our age, who the hell cares what other people think of our taste in clothes?!

The first picture is the Frogg Tog rain jacket - Hi Viz lime green with reflective seams
Second photo is the Hi Viz armored jacket
3rd is the Hi Viz helmet

On 85+ degree days I cannot wear jackets. Just too darn hot.
I know it is not a good idea to dress light but, I have to on those hot days. I just ride a little slower and more careful.

Usually, 2-5 times a riding season I have close calls with cagers. Recently I bought three T shirts to help with visability.
One fire engine red, one Flo orange, one Flo lime. I rotate these on hot days hoping drivers can see me better.

I wear a HiVis mesh jacket 90% of the time. If its just too hot ill wear a HiVis shirt from a industrial supply house.

I usually wear a mesh jacket, modular helmet and gloves no matter how hot it is.  If the temperature is above 90 degrees F, I wear a cooling vest underneath my mesh jacket. Last week, I received a pair of mesh pants.  I have not worn them yet on a ride.

ATGATT. Which to me means jacket, gloves, armored jeans, boots and of course a full face (modular) lid. 99% of the time there's a hi-viz vest over the jacket too.

Yes it can get hot in summer but not too bad if I keep moving, although on occasion (to somewhat mangle the line from Yellow Submarine) I will admit that I do qualify as a "stinky boot beast" as a result.

If you are older than 10 you should never be caught wearing Crocs.

Local 63 yr old killed 1 mile from my house.....50mph 2 lane country highway with cross street. She didn't see his Harley and turned in front of him.
Maybe he shouldn't have been blasting 50mph thru the intersection when he saw cars waiting to turn....but he was a seasoned cycle rider - so will not second guess him.

I've switched over to HiVis jackets, one for cooler/cold weather and one mesh, and it seems more people are seeing me coming down the road. I also picked up a couple of HiVis t-shirts, which I sometimes wear underneath the jacket if I decide to ride without the jacket.

Helmet always, jeans and usually hiking boots or motorcycle boots. I've gone down once and lost some skin and would rather not repeat that experience.

I've also added extra LED lights to my bike to help. During the daytime I usually kept the headlight on the dim setting, but a friend said it wasn't very visible so now I keep it on bright during the day.
