My Like is in the shop

I went riding into town yesterday morning to get a new tire installed.  Halfway there I realized I had left one of my saddle bags opened, so I pulled off at a gas station to close it.  When I got back on and went to leave, I hit the gas and the scooter barely moved whereas normally it would leave at a normal pace.  Since this was during rush hour traffic, I had to get on the gas though and I quickly noticed that the clutch was slipping much more than usual.  Typically, the clutch is fully engaged by the time the scooter hits around 7 mph, but this time the clutch finally fully grabbed at 15 mph, and it seemed as though the engine was revving up slightly higher than normal.  When I had left my house just 5 miles earlier, the scooter behaved as normal.  Could this be caused by a clutch spring breaking?  Beyond that, it ran fine accept for a slight reduction in top speed from 61 mph on level ground down to about 59 mph. 

I have also recently noticed that my rear brake is bleeding down over a long period of time.  It must have an internal leak because over a period of the scooter sitting for a couple of days, I can grab the rear brake and the handle will almost touch the hand grip before there is resistance.  The next time you hit the rear brake the feel is normal.  There are no outside fluid leaks either. 

So I called up the closest dealer to me (30 miles away) and they told me to bring it in.  So hopefully by this next week I'll have an idea of what is going on with it.

Well, I called the dealership today and got an update on my Like.  The service rep told me that they could not find anything wrong with the clutch or the brakes, but they did find an excess amount of play in the throttle.  Upon closer inspection they found the throttle cable adjustment was stripped out (I have never adjusted the throttle) and needs to be replaced.  They told me this is why the clutch took a long time to grab and why my top speed was down by a couple of MPH. 

The parts are on order and it should be ready by late next week.

I picked up my Like from the shop last week and it did fix the problem.  There was no charge at all since it was a warranty repair. 

After picking it up, I rode it 73 miles to my fiance's house and about 99% of that trip was at full throttle going down the highway.  I love this little scooter as it never missed a beat the entire way, and got 54 mpg to boot!!!

Most of the local highways are pretty nice and smooth for the most part.  There are some pretty bad roads here and there so I tend to stay away from them.  Since I live in the south, we don't get much snow at all and it doesn't freeze very much so the roads tend to be better than in the north. 

But even in town, when leaving a stop light I typically am at full throttle till I hit the speed limit, or another stop light!!

Well, the last time I had my Like in the shop, it had 1400 miles on the odometer.  Now at 2500 miles I am experiencing the same thing again.  I wonder if my riding at wide open throttle for such long periods of time has anything to do with this, what now seems like, reoccuring problem? 

So, sometime this next week I'll be dropping my Like back off at the local dealer to see what they can do.

Just something quick and easy to check, the "puke tube". I have read on here that if you ride wot a lot that that tends to fill up. I don't know what the symptoms are if it gets too full.

Never really looked at where the throttle cable attaches down there - is there something that could strip out if a person is really honking on the throttle, repeatedly?
Yes please, keep us posted for the findings and the fix!
3200 here & no issues - 75 > 82 MPG (lower numbers now that riding in 40F degree weather 1/2 the time. Still making those O'Dark:30 daily jaunts. Will catch up on my sleep when I get even older. )

If the clutch were engaging the same as it was then I would say you may be on to something.  However, just like last time, it feels like the clutch is slipping.  The dealer told me last time it had delayed engagement because I was not giving it very much gas because of the stripped out throttle.  I typically get on the gas pretty hard from a dead stop to keep ahead of the cars around me, so I am used to the clutch engaging pretty quickly.

I am pretty sure the problem was at the grip, which I have never looked at, much less adjusted.  I really don't know if it is caused from me being at WOT so often, or just a bad part/assembly from the factory.  I really have no idea. 


The best fuel economy I have seen so far is right at 70 mpg.  That was with a LOT of in town driving.  The worst fuel economy is 48 mpg which was riding on the highway at full throttle with a headwind for almost a full tank of fuel. 


I have to say, with how I ride, I have been fully impressed by my Like!!  It takes the beating I give it and keeps on going!

Well, I had to drop off my Like at the shop to get worked on 2 days ago.  I was going to wait until later to drop it off but it started to run really rough.  It started to miss and die, then come back and run ok.  The check engine light came on as well.  So I babied it to the shop and dropped it off. 

I think the running rough may be just a bad tank of fuel since it is time to fill up and it seemed to get worse the more I rode it.

I just got a call from the dealership.  They said there was 3 codes stored.  2 of those were in regards to throttle position and throttle position sensor problems.  The other code was a running rich code.  They reset the codes and took it for a test ride and was able to hit 62 mph.  He is going to call Kymco on Tuesday to see if Kymco wants them to do anything else.  So that's where we stand.  On Tuesday I should know more.

Reminds me of the watercooled, linked brakes 50cc sport-scooters! Amazing what they build into scoots.
