Need help from a Super 8 owner
« on: July 25, 2013, 12:02:47 AM »
Looking to replace my LIKE 200i rear shocks with a set made for the Super 8 Kymco.
could one of you owners throw a tape measure on the rear shock and tell me the measurement from top mount hole to bottom mount hole. (distance from center of bolt to center of the other bolt -NOT total length of shock - but mounts distance.) and your impressions for riding 2 up - medium sized people (say 325lbs total for the 2 of you)
Thanks very much!

I have a Super 8 Stig and the shock measures 13 inches from bolt to bolt... just wasn't able to do it earlier because of the rains...  ;)

Mr Vivo, You're a peach! and your shocks don't cost too much, either! So, Super 8 shocks or Progressive ?! ($95 vs @$250~!)What we have to do Vivo  is put you and the lovely Mrs. Vivo on a LIKE 200i ..... and see if you two bottom out the shocks or see the lower body edge nearly touching the muffler top. :-}

I have to add this... My son is around 240 lbs. and I'm 180 lbs. and we've done some trips here and there many times also... no issues even...  Another factor I think is that the suspension travel of the Super 8 is greater than the Like... so the like is more likely to bottom out sooner than the S8... my two cents...

Here's another point to ponder Stig, the Like weighs 120 kgs. while the Super 8 is 125.5 kgs.  let's do the math...

Vivo,
I just received my new Super 8 (Kymco) shocks (Black). The originals were yellow and getting rusty and ugly. Can I change these myself with standard tool sets or do I need special tools (i.e. spring compressors)?

No special tools are needed, just take the bolts off and the shock should come off.

..also might want to have an extra person to help support the scoot...

..it can be done alone, but it's easier if you have someone holding the weight of the scoot off the fasteners while you are taking them out...

Amen wordslinger. Im all by myself in the city and had to do shock work. I'd like to call it "scooter see-saw". Had to use the main stand as a balancing point and use my feet/body to have the scoot lean the direction i needed all while un/installing the shock!

Thanks all. I got the shocks done.... but bucket had to come out, rear fairings off, muffler (right side). The top bolts are inaccessible without fairings (rear fender body) off. And the rear bolt bottom needs muffler removal (bolt too long to remove). In any case they look great and your help is appreciated.
