Final drive/trans. gear oil for People 50????
« on: July 28, 2009, 03:14:31 PM »
I just purchased a pre-owned People 50 about a week ago.  It has a little less than 300 miles on it now and I want to change-out the final drive/trans. oil.  The problem is, I can't seem to locate any straight SAE-90 gear oil in my area, which is the gear oil the owner's manual calls for.  What to do?  I have some Mobil 1 Synthetic SAE 75W-90 just waiting to be used I used in my previous Yamaha C3, so will that work just as good, if not better?  Anybody got any advice, please give me a clue here.  In the meantime, the scooter is wanting to be ridden, but needs the replacement lube installed first ; )

Thanks!

Happy scootin'!

People 50 final drive/transmission gear oil update...

I put in a call to KYMCO USA down in S.C. and left word for a technical rep to email me regarding what gear lube I could use, especially since I had zero luck finding what the People 50 owner's manual said to use (SAE-90 gear lube).  The rep replied saying that the Mobil 1 Synthetic 79W-90 gear oil I already had on-hand would work just great, no problem.  Glad I didn't have to go out and purchase a quart, which ain't cheap.

Hope this post will help someone in the future.

Happy and safe scootin'! ;)

Hi S-M, I have used napa 75-90 synth. for all my scoots/ mopeds. NEVER had a problem w/ seals, gear wear. I am a firm believer that science can determin what is required far better than a dead diaonsour or the high dollar oil companies. Just to show my faith, I purchased a 1978 honda nc50 which had a bad output shaft seal leak. While waiting for a new seal from the local dude, I continued to ride w/ new synth. The manual calls for straight 30 wt. As always I used my old faithfull. The new seal is sitting in my box of spare parts, and the leak stopped after aprox 20-30 miles. I have put almost 600 miles on this bike. STILL good. I grew up in the seventies riding sixties bikes of all sorts, and when synthetics came out, Most of the old problems died w/ the dionasours. Live by the sword-die by the sword.

I had the same problem with the oil i could not find it in any car parts shop but since i live close to the ocean their are a bunch of marine supply stores here. I figured the oil they use in the outboard motors for the gearbox should be similar stuff. Sure enough i walked into the shop and it turnes out SAE 90 is one of the most common outboard engine gear oil. They had a bunch of it and it's cheap too.
